Boardman track teams compete in indoor meets
The Boardman boys indoor track team competed at YSU Jan. 29 at the WATTS Center on campus. The meet was the second of the season for the boys’ team.
Highlighting the Spartans success was senior Allen Starkey, who won the long jump in his first competition of the year with a leap of 21-9.5. Also in the long jump and in his first competition was senior Devin Campbell, who placed fifth with a jump of 21-3. Campbell continued his impressive indoor debut with a third-place finish in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.10.
Junior Nathan Jones finished fifth in the 60-meter dash in 7.18 and senior Ricky Williams was 16th with a time of 7.42. In the 200-meter dash, Williams was seventh with a time of 23.35. Junior Sam Sheronovich was 10th overall in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:13 and sophomore Justin Maroni was 10th in the 1600 meters with a time of 4:57.
The 4x200 meter relay team of Jones, senior Mike Moxley, senior Darel Green and sophomore Jarvis Cummings finished third with a time of 1:35.8. The 4x400 relay team of Moxley, Green, sophomore Ivan Adu-Poku and sophomore Alan Burns was fourth with a time of 3:44.
The 4x800 meter relay team of Burns, Moxley, Sheronovich, and Maroni was third overall in a time of 8:54. In the shot put, senior John Kuczek was eighth overall with a throw of 43-10.
The Boardman High School girls indoor track and field team also opened up its 2012 season by competing at the Youngstown State indoor meet. Twenty-two girls competed in the meet with four events placing in the top eight overall in the meet.
Junior Sarina Mauerman placed second in the pole vault with her career-best opening indoor height of 8-6. Junior Lauren Davila, competing for the first time for Boardman in the shot put, tossed the ball 34-2 æ”, good enough to place fourth overall in the meet.
Senior teammate Megan Howard threw 31-1 to earn eighth-place honors.
In the running events, the 4x800 meter relay team placed sixth with a time of 11:14.21.
The team consisted of freshmen Regan O’Hara and Jordan Grantonic and juniors Daisy Corso and Audrey Keleman.
Grantonic came back later in the meet to compete in the 3200-meter run and placed eighth with a time of 12:30.73.
A total of 37 girls are participating in the indoor program led by seniors Lesley Koch, Megan Howard and Victoria Moore.
