Programs link up to help manufacturers
CHAMPION
The Kent State University at Trumbull and the Trumbull County Joint Vocational School have joined to help meet the needs of area manufacturers.
The two say they will combine more than $3.6 million worth of equipment available on the career center campus and university campus.
Students can then attend classes on each campus depending on employer needs.
There are more than 60 courses that are part of the collaborative program that addresses everything from industrial mechanics and welding to engineering.
Delphi retirees will meet with Williams
WARREN
Representatives of the Delphi Salaried Retirees will meet Friday morning with Jay Williams, executive director of the Federal Office of Recovery for Auto Communities and Workers, at U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan’s Warren office.
The retirees say they hope Williams can “help us move our issues to a successful conclusion and the thousands of jobs that have been lost to our economy.”
The retirees say reinstating earned benefits would give an immediate boost to the economy.
There are about 1,500 Delphi salaried retirees in the Mahoning Valley.
Corbett expected to sign drilling bill
HARRISBURG, PA.
Gov. Tom Corbett is expected to sign a sweeping bill that could force Pennsylvania’s booming natural- gas industry to help pay for a wide range of state and local government programs, toughen safety standards and limit the ability of local officials to keep drilling out of their towns.
The 174-page bill was negotiated among Republicans and unveiled Monday. It passed the House on Wednesday, 101-90, and the Senate on Tuesday, 31-19, largely along partisan lines. Seven Democrats voted for it; 13 Republicans opposed.
Corbett, a Republican, did not say when he will sign the bill, but as soon as he does, about 35 counties will have 60 days to decide whether to impose a 15-year fee on their local wells.
