A local veterinarian and his wife announced Tuesday the largest single gift to the Poland Schools Foundation for Educational Excellence.

Dr. Daniel N. Ebert and Ruth Ebert have donated $25,000 to the foundation to be used in support of science education at Poland Seminary High School.

Although the Eberts have given the foundation the $25,000 in a lump sum, they instructed that it be disbursed in 10 annual installments of $2,500, said Dennis LaRue, the foundation’s president, in a statement.

Ebert served on the Poland Board of Education from 1978 to 1986 and has owned and operated an animal hospital on Youngstown’s South Side for more than 45 years. Ruth Ebert is a nurse at the animal hospital.

“[Our] donation to the foundation is motivated by the education our four sons received while attending Poland schools,” Ebert said in a statement. Three entered medicine. Two are doctors, and the third is a veterinarian.

LaRue said the foundation deeply appreciates the donation.

The Poland Schools Foundation for Educational Excellence is an academic booster club that has raised more than $265,000 during its existence to fund scholarships and internal projects in the Poland school district. These projects range from new lighting for the high-school auditorium to minigrants for teachers.
