Seeking homes for cats

WARREN

The Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County is trying to find homes for some of the 60 cats found in a Pacific Place Northwest home a week ago.

Ken Herlinger, humane officer for the Animal Welfare League, says court officers serving an eviction notice called the Warren Police Department, which called him about the cats. The homeowner had lost his job because of a plant closing, Herlinger said.

But the homeowner has agreed to return to the house each day to feed about 20 cats with food from the Animal Welfare League. The other 40 cats were taken by several other area animal shelters. None of the cats appeared to be malnourished or sick, but the owner and his wife allowed the situation to get out of control by not having the animals spayed or neutered.

For more information about the cats, call 330-394-4122 from 1 to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Trumbull budget

WARREN

Trumbull County commissioners are likely to approve a 2012 general-fund budget of $42.3 million later this month, almost exactly the same as the 2011 spending plan, Trumbull County Auditor Adrian Biviano says.

One of the chief sources of revenue used to pay for the deputy sheriffs, corrections officers, prosecutors and other county employees and services in the general fund is the county sales tax. It brought in $22.3 million in 2011, an increase of $1.8 million over 2010.

The additional sales-tax revenue won’t cause the county’s budget to rise, Biviano said, because the county experienced reduced revenue from several other sources in 2011 such as $700,000 less in tangible personal-property taxes, $300,000 less in property taxes resulting from last year’s property reappraisal and $180,000 less of investment income.

The county spent almost the exact amount it budgeted in 2011 and will continue to have a $4 million “cushion” in its sales-tax account, Biviano said.
