Youngstown Phantoms center Austin Cangelosi has been named the USHL’s co-offensive player of the week.

Cangelosi scored three goals and two assists last week as the Phantoms (23-13-3, 49 points) won two of three games. The wins came on the road against Dubuque Fighting Saints (5-3) and the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders (4-3).

Cangelosi, a Boston College commit, is the seventh different Phantoms player to earn a weekly league honor.

“I was actually a bit surprised it hadn’t happened yet,” Phantoms coach Anthony Noreen said. “It’s something that’s definitely been a long time coming and something that is well-deserved. I couldn’t be happier for him.”

Cangelosi netted the Phantoms’ goal in their 3-1 loss last Wednesday to the Chicago Steel.

On Friday, Cangelosi scored the game-winning goal and added a pair of assists in Dubuque, Iowa.

On Saturday, he scored the first goal in the Phantoms’ first franchise win at the Stable in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Cangelosi ranks second on the Phantoms and eighth in the USHL in scoring with 19 goals, 22 assists and 41 points through 31 games.

Monday, the Phantoms traded a fifth-round draft pick for this June’s USHL Draft to the Omaha Lancers for second-year forward Jonathan Liau.

Liau has seven goals, eight assists and 15 points through 34 games. He is committed to Princeton University for fall 2012.

“[Liau] is a fast winger with some solid stick skills,” said Jason Koehler, the Phantoms director of player personnel. “Since we lost [Stephen] Collins [lower body injury], we thought it would be a diligent move. He helps us out — provides some more forward depth — and brings some added experience as a second-year guy in this league.”
