1899: A peace treaty between the United States and Spain is ratified by the U.S. Senate.

1952: Britain’s King George VI dies at Sandringham House in Norfolk, England; he is succeeded as monarch by his daughter, who becomes Queen Elizabeth II.

1978: Muriel Humphrey takes the oath of office as a United States senator from Minnesota, filling the seat of her late husband, former Vice President Hubert Humphrey.

1992: A C-130 military transport plane crashes in Evansville, Ind., killing 16 people.

1987: Responding to budget cuts, Trumbull County Prosecutor Dennis Watkins furloughs an attorney and a secretary in the support division, a move that will save $30,000.

1972: The Youngstown district workmen’s widely publicized reputation for stubbornly and successfully resisting industrial “speed ups” apparently has cost thousands of industrial jobs in the area and is threatening the security of others, writes George R. Reiss, Vindicator business writer.

1937: A majority of Mahoning County lawyers interviewed by a reporter oppose President Roosevelt’s proposal to add justices to the Supreme Court of the United States and describe it as an attempt to grasp power.

The Important railroads serving the Youngstown district operated in the black in 1936 for the first time since 1930 and smashed all previous records for traffic in the first month of 1937.
