The Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown have served the Mahoning Valley for more than 125 years. The HIV/AIDS Ministry started as a prayer support group in 1992 by four nuns.

Services: Cafe and pantry that distributes food and personal items on the third Saturday of the month, pastoral visitation, children’s program and clinic.

Clinic: Since 2001, the ministry has operated an adult and pediatric clinic at Oakhill Renassiance Place in Youngstown. It offers walk-in testing, treatment services, social worker, benefits assistance and counseling. The clinic is funded through federal grants, Medicare and Medicaid. A small percentage of patients have health insurance. Services are provided regardless of ability to pay. Donations are accepted.

In charge: Sister Kathleen Minchin, director, was one of four Ursulines who formed the prayer group in 1992. A hospital chaplain then, she and other nuns pooled observations on how HIV/AIDS was affecting individuals and families. Brigid Kennedy is associate director.
