Rogers named to Dean’s list
Poland native Christina Rogers has been named to the Dean’s list in the University of Notre Dame’s College of Arts and Letters for outstanding scholarship during the Fall 2011 semester.
Students who achieve dean’s honors at Notre Dame represent the top 30 percent of students in their college.
Area writers group to meet in Canfield
Area writers are invited to attend Monday Night Writers on Feb. 20 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Peaberry’s Caf . Led by author and professional writer Nancy Christie, the two-hour sessions will include both writing exercises and discussions on the creative and business aspects of writing. Those with ‘works-in-progress’ are welcome to bring copies of their projects for comments and critiques from the group.

Interfaith Tea planned for Feb. 7
The 67th annual Greater Youngstown Women’s Interfaith Tea is planned for Tuesday at the St. Monica Guild of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. The event begins at 1 p.m. at the church and is followed by refreshments and fellowship in the social hall.
The tea is free and open to women of all religions. This year’s guest speaker is Sister Patricia McNicholas, executive director of the Beatitude House.

ABWA meeting set
The Tri-Gold Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will meet on Wednesday at A La Carte Catering in Canfield. A social at 5:30 p.m. will be precede a buffet dinner at 6 p.m.
The cost for dinner is $18 and includes chicken cordon bleu, roast pork, baked white fish, vegetables, salad, rolls, desert and coffee or tea. The speaker of the evening will be Patty Kostelnak. Her topic is ‘Heart Disease in Women.’ The highlight of the night will be the announcement of the chapter’s Women of The Year Award.

Ostomy support group to meet on Feb. 14
Youngstown Area Ostomy Support Group will meet on Feb. 14 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Cedar Room at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center.
The Ostomy Support Group provides information and encouragement to individuals who have or will have ostomies. Families and friends are welcome. Refreshments are provided and parking is free. For information, interested individuals should call 330-480-3440.
Wine charity event set
The Hope Foundation of the Mahoning Valley presents its second annual Wine for Hope, featuring dining stations and gourmet dessert station complete with fine wines, entertainment, memorabilia silent auction and raffles. The event will take place on Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m. inside Antone’s Banquet Centre.
Tickets are on sale now for $50 per person and a cash bar.

Wine and beer tasting scheduled
Team Schein is hosting a Wine and Beet Tasting at Vintage Estate Wine and Beer in Boardman on Feb. 26 from 3 to 5 p.m.
The cost is $20 per person and includes six tastings. Choose from six wine selections or 12 beers on tap from the Diamond bar, Hors D’Oeuvres and musical entertainment by Ryan Ross.

Ursuline Center hosts Valentine’s Day dinner
Delicious food and delightful music are on the menu for The Ursuline Center’s annual Valentine’s Day Dinner.
The educational center, a ministry of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown, is sponsoring the event on Feb. 14 at 6:30 p.m. in the center’s auditorium, 4280 Shields Road. in Canfield.

Trim a tree for February
The Poland library invites children of all ages to decorate an ornament for the all-seasons tree. This program is going on from now till Feb. 29 during library hours.

During the month of February, the Poland library invites school-aged children to make art on a string to swing from the sky above the librarian’s desk.

The Poland library will host Pajama Jam on Feb. 27 from 6:30 to 7 p.m. Put on your pajamas and bring the whole family for stories and more fun.
Tales and Talk for 2s and 3s
The Poland library will host Baby Brilliant: Tales and Talk for 2s and 3s on Feb. 9, 16 and 23 at 10:30 a.m. The program will include developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help children, ages 2-3, become successful readers.
Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Bonding with Babies and Books
The Poland library will be hosting Baby Brilliant: Bonding with Babies and Books for babies 6-23 months on Feb. 8, 15, 22 and 29 at 10 a.m. The program will include developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help children become successful readers.

Junior Women’s League meeting set
The next meeting of the Boardman-Poland Junior Women’s League will be Monday at The English Pub, 1305 Boardman-Poland Road.
A Valentine’s Day party is planned for women who are interested in joining the league. Wear something red to celebrate Women’s Heart Month.

St. Valentine’s Day dinner set
The St. Vincent DePaul Society of Mahoning County and The Knights of Columbus Bishop Fenwick Council No. 13586 are sponsoring their 2012 St. Valentine’s Day Benefit Gala Fundraiser Feb. 11 at Mr. Anthony’s in Boardman. Doors open at 6 p.m. and dinner is at 7 p.m.
This year’s theme is “Open Your Hearts for the Less Fortunate”. This annual event is a fundraiser to support the Soup Kitchen and Food Pantry of the St. Vincent DePaul Society and the charitable works of the Knights.
Tickets are $50 per person and include hors d’oeuvres, filet mignon buffet dinner, dessert and a chance to win part of $3,500 in cash prizes. Men’s Garden Club sponsors scholarship

Men’s Garden Club seminar set
The Men’s Garden Club of Youngstown will host its annual winter seminar on Feb. 18 at Fellows Riverside Gardens from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year’s theme is “Gardening on the Shady Side.”

Cardinal Mooney open house scheduled
Cardinal Mooney High School, 2545 Erie St., will host an open house tomorrow from noon to 3 p.m.
The open house, which will conclude Mooney’s “Catholic Schools Week” celebration, is designed to give the public an opportunity to visit the school and learn more about the school and its curriculum. Members of the faculty and administration will be available to explain the school’s curriculum, detailed new course offerings for the 2012-2013 school year and to discuss financial aid opportunities.
In addition, students will be featured in various demonstrations and projects. Visitors will be invited to take guided tours of the building. Information concerning application procedures will be available and new student applications will be accepted.
The school’s Alumni Association will sponsor a “Tuition Drawing” featuring four $500 scholarship prizes. In addition, the Cardinal Mooney Home and School Association will host a Chinese auction in the cafeteria. The open house is open to all Cardinal Mooney parents, friends, alumni and prospective students and their parents.
Friendly’s offers cones for kids
Poland Friendly’s is kicking of its annual “Cones for Kid” campaign. The Valentine’s Day fundraiser will benefit 30 Easter Seals Camp Friendly’s programs.
For a $1 donations, Friendly’s will provide restaurant guests with five Valentine’s Day cards, redeemable for free Friendly’s Kid’s Cones. The campaign runs through Feb. 13.
Funds raised will support Easter Seals Camp Friendly’s Æprograms essential to building a sense of independence and accomplishment for thousands of children annually.
Mahoning Valley Pizza Cook-Off tickets on sale

MetroMutts walk set for Feb. 12
The MetroMutts will be taking a half-mile walk on Feb. 12 at 11 a.m. The hike will go by the new driving range and Learning Center area that are under construction. Hot cocoa and treats will be served afterward, weather permitting. Meet on the patio at Mill Creek Golf Course.

Winter Garden Seminar is Feb. 18
The annual Winter Seminar of the Men’s Garden Club of Youngstown and cosponsored by Mill Creek MetroParks will be on Feb. 18 from 9:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registration is from 8:15 to 9:15 a.m.
The seminar will focus on a challenge to any gardener — shade. Five garden experts will share their suggestions for making shade gardening a rewarding experience.
