The Canfield wrestling team tuned up this weekend’s EOWL tournament and the postseason by finishing 14th out of 38 schools at the Bill Dies Invitational on Jan. 20-21.

Perennial power Brecksville won event.

Top wrestlers for Canfield were Korey Frost (third, 106), Jake Dunbar (fourth, 126), Anthony Spencer (seventh, 113) and John Poullas (seventh, 152).

Other wrestlers posting wins for Canfield were Kyle Hido (120), Nick Borucki (132), Shawn Williams (138), Steve Hamilton (160), Sam Connor (195) and Curtis Burns (220).

“We had several kids that wrestled very well. I would have liked to see a few more of our kids make it to the second day, but overall we were pleased,” said Canfield coach Dean Conley. “We continue to show improvement as we head into our Howland match and then the EOWL tournament.”

The Canfield Middle School team has also been busy on the mats. The team took second on Jan. 21 at the OAC state dual qualifier. This qualifies the team for the State Duals tournament.

Canfield beat Canton GlenOak (72-23), Austintown A (58-21) and North Canton (51-33). The Cards lost to Wadsworth (64-27). Going 4-0 on the day were Georgio Poullas, David Labra, Jacob Esarco and Jaret Bunch.

The prior week, the middle school team finished third out of 14 teams at the Uniontown Lake tournament. Top placers for the Cardinals were Nathan Buttle (fifth), Kyle West (fourth), Georgio Poullas (first), CJ Frost (first), Nick Sammarco (sixth), David Labra (first), Jaret Bunch (third), David Hofsess (fourth), Jacob Esarco (first) and Nick Maxin (fourth).
