BGMS sweeps Center

Boardman Glenwood’s eighth-grade boys basketball team defeated Center 49-45. Glenwood’s balanced offensive attack was led by Preston Stitt with 15 points. Gavin Dill added nine points on three-pointers, while Drew Wagner and Devan Cool scored six a piece.

The seventh-grade boys team put together its best outing of the season by beating Center 41-28. Leading the way for Glenwood was JR Ryan with 15 points. Bryce Richey scored nine, while Sean Birchfield added six and Mark Smaldino chipped in five points.

Also scoring for BGMS were Travis Koontz, Anthony Davanzo and Gavin Strines with two points each.

BGMS girls down Center

Boardman Glenwood’s eighth-grade girls basketball team defeated rival Center 30-25. Natalie Wilson led the scoring with 11 points, followed by Krista Johnson with seven.

Katie Platt, Bailey Brandt and Marissa Hanna chipped in with four points each.

The seventh-grade girls had a solid victory of Boardman Center, winning 30-12. Leading scorers were Aniyuh Spann with 15 and Lauren Pavlansky with 13 points.

Alexis Stutz and Maryssa Wagner each had one point. Key rebounds by Cailyn Campana, Faith Clear, Taylor Halowell, Alaina Hufnagel, Charlotte Voytko and Emily Wagner pushed the team to the win.

Nominations accepted for Boardman HOF

Nominations are being accepted for the Boardman High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

They should be submitted to the school’s athletic office at 7777 Glenwood Ave., Boardman, Ohio 44512.

Glenwood wrestlers earn three more wins

The Boardman Glenwood Middle School team added three more wins to their record as they captured third place at the Spartan Duals hosted by tournament champion Boardman Center. The Spartans only loss came to the Girard Indians, 33-43. The Glenwood wrestlers earned victories against Liberty 48-21, South Range 64-12 and AMS Blu e 53-30. The three wins raised their record to 15 team wins and 210 individual match victories. Each starting wrestler earned a win and contributed to the team’s success.

Mooney’s Vinopal to play at Duquesne

Amy Vinopal, a center/mid-fielder on the Cardinal Mooney girl’s soccer team, has announced her plans to sign a Division I national letter of intent to play soccer at Duquesne University.

Vinopal, who was named Division II “Player of the Year” in Ohio scored 26 goals and had 25 assists for the Cards last fall. In addition, she was named to the “All State” and All-County” teams and was named Vindicator “Player of the Year” and “Fall Athlete of the Year.” She is the daughter of Charles Vinopal of Boardman. She is coached by Frank Sikich.

BGMS wrestlers split matches

The Boardman Glenwood wrestlers recently split matches with rival AMS Falcons. The Spartans lost to undefeated AMS Red 59-36, but bounced back with a 78-12 victory over AMS Blue.

Winning matches for the Spartans were Matt Maroni, Richard Craig, Mark Gotham, Nick Patoray, Sam Varga, Tyler Stolar, Alex Birchfield, Jared Hoover and Brandon Alm. Marcus Webster, Conner Kochansky, Danny Bocerio, AJ Pantaleo and Tyler Dempsey each won both matches by pin.

Glenwood boys top Newton Falls

The Boardman Glenwood eighth-grade boys were victorious over Newton Falls 39-31. Preston Stitt led all the scorers with 20 points. Also scoring for BGMS were Devan Cool with seven points, Gavin Dill with five, Jamison Lytle with four and Drew Wagner with three.

Glenwood scored 27 points in the second half, while the Spartans defense limited Newton Falls to six total points in the first half.

The BGMS seventh-grade boys put together a total team effort as they beat Newton Falls 42-18. Leading the Spartans’ offensive attack was John Ryan with 16 points. Bryce Richey was next in the scoring with seven points, while Mark Smaldino added five.

Finishing the scoring were Sean Birchfield, Gavin Strines and Nick Augustine, who all had three points. Nick Stamp and Anthony Davanzo added two points and Pierre Grizzard had one.

BGMS girls lose to Newton Falls

Boardman Glenwood’s eighth-grade Lady Spartans lost to Newton Falls, 44-31. Leading scorers for the Spartans were Krista Johnson with 16 points, Bailey Brandt with five points and Marissa Hanna with five points.

The seventh-grade girls’ record fell to 4-5 with a tough loss to Newton Falls. Leading scorers in the defeat were Aniyuh Spann with four points, Lauren Pavlansky, Taylor Halowell and Faith Clear each with two points.

Glenwood girls fall to South Range

Boardman Glenwood’s Lady Spartans fell to 7- 3 on the year with a tough 32-27 loss to South Range. The Spartans were led by Krista Johnson with 10 points, Natalie Wilson with eight, Bailey Brandy with seven and Elli Hritz with two points.

The seventh-grade Lady Spartans lost a tough game to South Range, 27-16. Leading scorers were Aniyuh Spann with six, Taylor Halowell with three, Alexis Stutz and Maryssa Wagner with two each and Alaina Hufnagel with one.

BGMS boys down South Range

Boardman Glenwood’s eighth-grade boys basketball team defeated South Range 37-28. BGMS outscored South Range 15-6 in the fourth quarter to put the game away.

Preston Stitt had 11 points, Jamison Lytle had eight and Tim Captain had six to lead the BGMS offense.

The seventh-grade boys continued their winning ways as they beat South Range, 35-24. JR Ryan led all scorers with 12 points. Also scoring for the Spartans were Mark Smaldino with six, Dante Colaluca and Bryce Richey with four, Gavin Strines with three and Anthony Davanzo, Sean Birchfield and Nick Stamp all with two points.

Mooney’s Fox top scorer at Akron

AJ Fox, a graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School and a freshman on the University of Akron football team, received the Red Blair Award for being the high scorer on the team.

He was perfect in the place kicking department, going 8-for-8 in field goals and he hit all nine of his extra point tries.

Golf event set for this summer

The annual Pink Ribbon Gold Classic will be held at Tippecanoe Country Club on July 16. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The Pink Ribbon committee will also sponsor a bus trip this spring to a local casino. Watch for further details on both of these events.
