Man pleads innocent in Warren homicide

Daron Warfield Jr., 23, of Lane Drive Southwest, is in the Trumbull County jail on a $1 million bond after pleading innocent Tuesday of committing the city’s first homicide of 2012. He returns to Warren Municipal Court at 2 p.m. Monday.

Police issued a warrant for Warfield about a week after Domin’Que Hugley, 21, of Saratoga Avenue Southwest was killed by gunfire on Third Street Southwest on Jan. 12. Police believe the shooting occurred during a robbery. Warfield surrendered to police Monday.

Teen arrested, faces robbery charge

Police charged an 18-year-old man with robbery after scuffling with a downtown grocer while trying to steal soda and potato chips.

Damond Waller, 18, of Boardman, was arrested at 11:30 a.m. Monday after the owner of the Downtown Circle store on West Federal Street watched him stuff drinks and snacks into his bookbag. The owner followed Waller outside demanding return of the items, and the two men began to fight.

The store owner was able to grab Waller’s bookbag containing the stolen items.

Waller ran away but was arrested later after being identified by a citizen and police watched store security tapes.

Man beaten, robbed

YOUNGSTOWN

Police are trying to determine who pistol-whipped a 44-year-old city man in his South Side home then stole the money he received from a tax refund.

According to police, the man was in his Firnley Avenue home about 2 a.m. Monday when two men with their faces covered broke into the house and began pistol-whipping the man and demanding money.

The man handed over $500 he had just received from a tax refund and the two men ran off.

Man sentenced in robbery, burglary

WARREN

Daniel P. Hoolihan Jr., 20, of Edgewood Drive, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in the robbery of the Dunkin’ Donuts on Niles-Cortland Road in Howland Township on May 4 and a home-invasion burglary in Niles on June 24.

Hoolihan received his sentence this week in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court.

Hoolihan and Corey C. Monroe, 19, of Belvedere Avenue, participated in both robberies. Monroe received a six-year prison term for his role in the crimes.

Samantha Phillips, 19, of Edgehill Drive, a former Dunkin’ Donuts employee, is also charged in the Dunkin’ Donuts robbery.

Reserve deputy dies

YOUNGSTOWN

A longtime Mahoning County Sheriff Department’s reserve deputy who worked full time as a security guard for the Youngstown City Schools died Wednesday while working at Chaney High School.

Capt. John Beshara of the sheriff’s department said Robert Conway of Boardman collapsed while he was on duty at the West Side school.

Beshara said the Mahoning County coroner suspects Conway died of a heart attack.

He said Wednesday evening that funeral arrangements are not yet scheduled.
