No plea in robbery case

A 20-year-old Youngstown man already accused of a Jan. 21 robbery did not enter a plea Tuesday to new charges in a separate dollar-store robbery.

Eddie Lee Crook Jr. was charged with aggravated robbery and kidnapping Monday, his birthday, in connection with a Jan. 9 robbery at Family Dollar, 4030 Market St. A store employee told police a man held a gun to the back of his head, demanded money and after receiving money from the vault, fled south on Market Street.

Crook was arraigned Jan. 24 on charges of aggravated robbery and kidnapping. He is accused of robbing a pregnant employee at gunpoint at Family Dollar, 4026 South Ave. Crook remains in Mahoning County jail without bond.

Cops stop suspect

When a 30-year-old township man was pulled over for a traffic violation, police learned he also was wanted by federal court.

Brian L. Russell was arrested Monday on Washington Square Drive on charges of driving left of center, driving without lights and driving under the influence of alcohol, police said. Russell was indicted in federal court on a charge of possessing seven firearms illegally, as he had been convicted of a 2001 burglary in Mahoning County, according to records. Russell was taken to Mahoning County jail.

Stolen car recovered

An 18-year-old Youngstown woman has been charged with receiving stolen property after being found behind the driver’s seat of a stolen car. A man reported that his Ford Taurus was stolen from his Forest Park Drive home about 10 p.m. Monday, police said. The car was found outside of Burger King, 15 W. Midlothian Blvd. about 2 a.m. Tuesday, and police ordered the occupants to stay in the car at gunpoint, according to reports. The driver, Kawanjula T. Harden, was handcuffed and her three passengers questioned, police said. Harden told police she was originally picked up on Market Street by a man driving the car, driven to Burger King and told to wait in the car, reports state.

Cash register stolen

Township police are searching for a man who reportedly stole a cash register from a convenience store. About 1:40 a.m. Tuesday, the man entered the Country Fair, 1143 N. Canfield Niles Road, and asked the cashier for a carton of cigarettes.

The cashier said she could give him only individual packs, so the black male, about 6 feet tall and 200 pounds, walked to the back of the store and grabbed a quart of engine oil, according to a police report.

He returned to the register and asked the cashier for snuff and cigars. As she turned to grab the merchandise, he reached over the counter and grabbed the register, the report said. He fled southbound on state Route 46 in a white SUV.

Police are reporting a scam and warning that people should be careful.

A man called a woman Tuesday morning to tell her he was her grandson, that he’d been in a car accident, and he needed her to wire money, police said.

The caller was not really the woman’s grandson. Police are investigating.

West Side shooting

YOUNGSTOWN

A Crandall Avenue man has been charged with felonious assault after a shooting on the city’s West Side on Monday.

Kevin Newell, 44, was taken into custody after police responded to a South Glenellen residence just before midnight Monday and found a 41-year-old Parkcliffe Avenue woman bleeding from a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

The woman was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center for treatment.

Police asked the victim what had taken place leading up to the shooting, but she said she did not know anything.
