Blessing of waters

youngstown

The Eastern Orthodox Clergy Association of Mahoning Valley will conduct the sixth annual Blessing of the Waters ceremony at 3 p.m. Jan. 6 at the shore line of Lake Glacier in Mill Creek MetroParks.

The Rev. Thomas Constantine, pastor of St. John the Forerunner Greek Orthodox Church in Boardman, said the lake was chosen because its water flows into the Mahoning River. He said the service is about blessing people of the Valley.

Snow expected

YOUNGSTOWN

As more snow is expected this weekend, the Ohio Department of Transportation District 4 is reminding drivers to check BuckeyeTraffic.org to learn about current driving conditions on state routes and highways.

ODOT also urges drivers to plan ahead, give themselves extra time, remove snow from windows, lights, brake lights and signals, and turn on headlights if the windshield wipers are on, per state law.

Snowplow damage

AUSTINTOWN

Though snowplows primarily have been clearing roads and making travel easier, one caused a problem for a local resident.

Some time between 10:30 p.m. Wednesday and 10:30 p.m. Thursday, a snowplow caused damage to the fence that separates the property at 143 S. Canfield-Niles Road, owned by Joseph M. Mayor, from a local veterinary clinic, according to an Austintown police report.

Mayor told police that an “unknown business, using a snow plow” pushed all the snow from the clinic parking lot into the fence causing the damage.

No arrests have been made in the case.

Theft probed

YOUNGSTOWN

Police still are looking for two armed men who beat a South Side man and stole gifts from under his Christmas tree earlier this week.

According to police, two men went to the 32-year-old victim’s Firnley Avenue home and knocked on the door at 11 p.m. Christmas Day. When the victim’s girlfriend answered the door, the two men, both armed with guns, came into the house demanding valuables.

The victim said he was repeatedly pistol-whipped while the thieves took gifts from under the tree.

Gunman sought

YOUNGSTOWN

Police are looking for an armed, masked gunman who robbed and shot a 23-year-old man early Friday morning on the city’s North Side.

The victim told police he was walking in the area of Saranac Avenue and Elm Street just after midnight when he was approached by the armed man demanding money. The victim said he began to fight with the thief and was shot in the hand.
