For the first time ever, Billy Craig made an appearance at Woodside Elementary School to put on his “I Love This School” assembly Dec. 13.

“I saw this assembly at Frank Ohl Intermediate School when they had it last year and I thought it would be great to bring it here for the students to see,” said Woodside Principal Dennis Rice.

The “I Love This School” assembly uses a variety of character personalities to explore often difficult to discuss topics, like bullies, having respect for other students and adults, encouraging reading and math as something cool, and many other things. The characters, all Craig in different costumes, use music and jokes to lead the students in a healthy way of dealing with problems, like the ones that are discussed during the presentation, and the solutions that the students should follow if they are ever faced with those problems.

The goal of the assembly is to leave the students with a sense of comfort and to make all the students in the school feel closer to one another.

The presentation started with a rock-and-roll version of “Jingle Bells” and allowed students to participate by clapping. Craig came out with his first character personality — Super Sam. As Super Sam sang, he walked around the students, exchanging high fives and encouragement.

A persona that was a crowd favorite with the students was School Ja Boy, who rapped about how bullies are not cool and that all of the students should respect each other.
