Boardman swimmers excel at invitational

Boardman sophomore Brooke Bailey placed sixth in the 100 breast and seventh in the 100 butterfly at the annual Christmas Invitational at C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton last weekend.

Bailey also swam on Boardman’s seventh-place 200 medley relay with seniors Gaby DeAscentis and Colleen Manning and sophomore Sarah Gonda. Bailey and Manning and juniors Jordyn Markovitch and Jessica Hilk placed fifth in the 400 free relay. Manning, Markovitch, Hilk and sophomore Amanda Moss took eighth in the 200 free relay.

The meet, which draws the best teams from across Ohio, is considered a preview of February’s state meet, which is also at C.T. Branin.

Varsity girls lose to Canton GlenOak

The Boardman varsity girls basketball team couldn’t overcome a sluggish first quarter, falling to Federal League rival Canton GlenOak 59-50 last Saturday.

Kelly Tomcsanyi scored 18 points, Jenna Kuczek had 16 and Megan Volosin scored 12 to lead Boardman (2-4, 1-4 Federal), which fell behind 20-9 after one quarter.

Glenwood girls swept by AMS Blue

Boardman Glenwood’s seventh-grade girls basketball team lost to AMS Blue 20-10 on Dec. 10. Leading scorers for Glenwood were Ashley Clark wiith seven and Cassie Stitt with three.

The eighth-grade girls suffered their first defeat of the season, 45-20, against AMS Blue. Spann and Comer had six each, while Wagner and Halowell both had four points.

BGMS boys fall to AMS Blue

Boardman Glenwood’s seventh-grade boys lost to AMS Blue 38-21 on Dec. 10. Holden Lipke was the leading scorer with 10 points. Noah Falleti added five points, while Antonio Page, Brian Terlesky and Jarod Wilson each added two points. The eighth-grade boys basketball team fell to AMS Blue, 27-21. The team was led in scoring by Bryce Richey with eight points. JR Ryan had six points. Mark Smaldino and Gaven Strines led the squad in steals.

BGMS girls top Youngstown Christian

The Boardman Glenwood eighth-grade girls picked up their second win of the season, beating Youngstown Christian Dec. 13. Simone Comer led the way with 14 points. Pavlansky, Stutz, and Halowell each had four. Aniyuh Spann had three points and seven rebounds. Charlotte Voytko and Alaina Hufnagel rounded out the scoring with two points each. The seventh-graders lost a 21-17 decision to Youngstown Christian. Leading scorers were Ashley Clark with 12, Rachel Hritz (three) and Savannah Beule (two).

BGMS boys sweep Youngstown Christian

The seventh-grade boys defeated Youngstown Christian, 50-16. Leading the way for the Spartans were Noah Falleti with 15 points and Antonio Page with eight. Also scoring for the Spartans were Jimmy Lagese with six points, and Brad Boerio and Brian Terlesky with five each. Holden Lipke and Billy Cammack each had four a piece, while Evan Collins had three.

The eighth-graders beat Youngstown Christian, 44-24. The team was led in scoring by JR Ryan with 19 points. Gaven Strines was in double digits as well with 11. Also scoring for the team were Nick Augustine, Dante Colaluca, Sean Birchfield, Travis Koontz and Mark Smaldino.

Softball sign-ups set for Austintown league

Austintown girls softball league (slow-pitch) sign-ups, which are open to all Mahoning Valley girls, will be at the Austintown Township hall Jan. 5-6 from noon until 4 p.m. There will also be a free skills clinic at Austintown Middle School from 3-5 p.m. on Jan. 19. Additional sign-ups will be Feb. 2, 3, 16, and 17 from noon until 4 p.m.

Winter sports news

It’s winter sports season, and it promises to be a great season filled with game-winning shots, wrestling tournaments, strikes and spares, gymastic routines and swim meets.
