Austintown native makes ‘green’ ornament

Mariah Cuevas of Austintown created ornaments out of recyclable materials to decorate the Christmas tree at Fellow Riverside Gardens.

What can you make with an empty tuna can and some construction paper? Or how about old paper towel rolls and glitter?

For students in the Early Childhood Education program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center, these ordinary items were used to create ornaments for the Green Team’s Christmas tree.

The students were led by Early Childhood Education Instructor Julie Pagnotta. Using modge podge, newspapers and colored tissue paper, Mariah Cuevas (Austintown) created unique ornaments that can be put on the tree with paper clips. Brianna Eckman (West Branch) and Cierra Duvall (Springfield) cut paper towels into strips, painted them red and attached them together to form poinsettias.

The ornaments were part of a project created by the Green Team to have students create ornaments out of recyclable materials to decorate their Christmas tree at Fellow Riverside Gardens.
