The Alzheimer’s Association Greater East Ohio Area Chapter is offering free educational workshops on Tuesdays, Jan. 8 and 22, at Poland United Methodist Church, 1940 Boardman-Poland Road. The programs begin at 6:30 p.m.

The Jan. 8 program, ”The Basics: Memory Loss, Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease,” presents the basics of Alzheimer’s and how it may differ from other types of dementia or memory-loss conditions.

“Living with Alzheimer’s for Caregivers,” the Jan. 22 program, defines common symptoms of dementia and communication techniques for caregivers, and provides information about access to services and how to maintain good health as a caregiver.

Policy changes

COLUMBUS

The Autism Society of Ohio, an affiliate of the Autism Society, applauded policy changes in Ohio that add autism services to the state employee’s health-insurance plan and the upcoming federally managed health-insurance exchange.

“By including habilitative services, thousands of Ohio children will have access to services to help them learn, and keep or improve skills and functional abilities that they may not be otherwise developing,” said John Stacy, the ASO executive director.

Reopening program

YOUNGSTOWN

The Mahoning-Youngs-town Community Action Partnership, 1325 Fifth Ave., will mark the reopening of the Minority Business Assistance Center during a program from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Jan. 15. Guest speakers will be Sharon Smith, outgoing interim assistant deputy chief of the Ohio Development Services Agency, and shale-industry representatives.

Safety score

Sharon Regional Health System received an “A” Hospital Safety Score from the Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits.

The A, B, C, D or F scores are assigned to U.S. hospitals based on preventable medical errors, injuries accidents, and infections.

Money raised

SHARON, PA.

Students at the Sharon campus of Laurel Technical Institute presented the Sharon Regional Health Foundation $1,200 for the health system’s Connections Autism Program.

Two groups of LTI students challenged each other in the “Penny Wars,” organized by LTI instructor Sandra Young’s Marketing and Sales class, to see which group could raise the most money.

Personal training

Youngstown

The Jewish Community Center of Youngstown, 505 Gypsy Lane, is offering specialized personal training for female cancer survivors.

Personal trainer Shelia Cornell will be accepting requests from women who have battled through any form of cancer. Cornell will design personal training programs specific to the individual. Sessions will include strengthening of affected areas through a variety of exercises.

Cornell is a nationally certified personal trainer and group exercise instructor.
