Youngstown board worked with fiscal commission on its budget
In response to the Vindicator’s Dec. 18 editorial “Youngstown school system’s problems continue,” I want to add an important fact. Between 2006 and 2010, the Youngstown district was under the jurisdiction of the state appointed Financial Planning and Supervision Commission. In 2010, after thoroughly reviewing the current budget and the district’s five year forecast, the fiscal commission verified that funds were available to approve the contract with the Youngstown Education Association.
The Youngstown board has diligently monitored the budget and made significant reductions in staff over the past few years while at the same time implementing the academic standards mandated by the state and the Academic Distress Commission. At the same time, this district has expanded and made significant enhancements in its student programs without increasing costs to the general fund.
