As the year winds down, let’s give a shout out to some of the most enduring icons of pop culture. These five stayed on top of the game — or at least in the spotlight — in 2012:

v Meryl Streep, 62: The actress won her third Oscar for “The Iron Lady.” It cam on her record-setting 17th nomination.

v Madonna, 54: Not only did she score at the Super Bowl with her halftime show, but by year’s end, her “MDNA” global tour will be the highest grossing of any in 2012.

v Paul McCartney, 70: Sir Paul delivered a soulful “Hey Jude” at the opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics in London. McCartney’s amazing year continued right up to his performance at the 12-12-12 concert for Hurricane Sandy earlier this month.

v Queen Elizabeth II, 85: The queen gamely participated in a sketch in which she appeared parachute into the stadium at the same Summer Olympics opening ceremony.

v Clint Eastwood, 82: Clint made our night at the GOP convention with his infamous “empty chair” chat with President Obama. It becomes one of the enduring moments of the campaign, if also the most puzzling.

“Kennedy Center Honors” (9 p.m., cbs): The 35th Annual “Kennedy Center Honors” turns the spotlight on a fresh set of arts-and-and-entertainment standouts. On this year’s roster are musician Buddy Guy, actor Dustin Hoffman, funny man David Letterman, ballerina Natalia Makarova and members of the rock group Led Zeppelin. Caroline Kennedy hosts.

‘Schmo’ adds twist to the reality show

Spike will put a new twist on the reality show with its “The Joe Schmo Show,” premiering Jan. 8.

It purports to be a search for the next bounty hunter, with a cast of competitive hopefuls. But only one of the contestants is really hoping to make the grade — all the others are actors who personify the reality show stereotypes.

There’s the brainy Asian, the dim-witted blonde, Latino ex-con, the deaf woman with her signer, and best of all, the spoiled actor who feels entitled played to the max by Lorenzo Lamas.

The question is: when will Joe Schmo catch on that this is a set up? Not for 10 episodes at least.
