Ryan Fowler | Warren JFK, golf
When the weather outside is frightful, Ryan Fowler heads to Florida.
The sophomore at Warren JFK recently attended a 3-day golf camp in Tampa. It was more of a scouting combine where he can show off his skills to college coaches.
“It’s a great opportunity to play in front of them,” Fowler said. “I want to earn a college scholarship.”
Eagles golf coach Jim St. George says that won’t be a problem.
“He’s definitely college material,” St. George said. “He’s getting longer on his drives and hitting greens with his irons. He made great strides and steps up from his freshman season.”
In his first year of varsity, he averaged 81.4 and improved that with a 74 average, this year. He shot a 71 at the Yankee Run Invitational on Sept. 17 and an 86 at the Division III district tournament on October 4. But teammate Billy Phillips helped JFK capture the title with a 72.
“Whenever I had a bad round somebody was there to step up,” Fowler said. “We had a great team.”
Fowler shot a 162 at the state championship in Sunbury to finish in 20th place. He improved by six shots from Day 1 to Day 2.
“He showed resiliency and he can carry that into next year,” St. George said.
Fowler added, “Just seeing the best golfers and teams from across Ohio was a great experience.”
He has his sights set on becoming a PGA professional.
