Recycling offered for holiday items
YOUNGSTOWN
The Recycling Division of Mahoning County is engaged in the recycling of Christmas trees, gift-wrapping paper and greeting cards now through Jan. 31.
The wrapping paper and greeting cards should be collected in brown paper bags and delivered to any of the county’s 35 recycling drop-off sites.
Ribbons, bows and foil wrap will not be accepted.
Cut Christmas trees will be accepted from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at any of 13 locations, including Austintown Township Park, 6000 Kirk Road; Canfield Township Fire Station, 5007 Messerly Road; Poland Township Road Department, 7508 Clingan Road; and Community Corrections Association, 1771 Market St., Youngstown.
All decorations must be removed.
Struthers provides curbside Christmas-tree pickup.
The recycled trees will be weighted and submerged in local lakes as fish habitat.

The Mahoning County Land Bank has launched a new website for those interested in restoring vacant, tax-delinquent land to productive use.
The site, www.MahoningLandBank.com, features the land bank’s land-acquisition policies and procedures and application forms and a link to the county auditor’s property-search function.
Benefit planned at Boardman church

Glenwood Christian Fellowship and Goodness Grows are hosting a “Sounds and Grounds” benefit from 5 to 10 p.m. Jan. 12.
“Sounds and Grounds” live music and cafe night will be in the cafe at Glenwood Christian Fellowship, 7872 Glenwood Ave. The menu will include soup, sandwiches, paninis and hot and cold drinks, sourced locally by Kathryn Hatch of The Zaney Pearl.
Goodness Grows is a faith-based nonprofit organization seeking community transformation through agriculture that gives life. Agricultural leadership and training empower local groups and individuals to create a healthier, more self-sustaining and economically viable community for future generations in the Mahoning Valley. Common Ground Church Community and Goodness Grows are collaborating to host a screening of the documentary “What’s ‘Organic’ About Organic?” and the documentary “Coal Country” at Common Ground Church, 2310 W. South Range Road.
The “What’s ‘Organic’ about Organic?” film showing will be at 6 p.m. Jan. 19. Elsa Higby will speak about the Rodale Institute Agriculture Supported Community training. This film delves into the challenges that arise when a grass-roots agricultural movement evolves into a booming international market.
The “Coal Country” film showing will be at 6 p.m. Jan. 26. Julia Fuhrman-Davis will give simple ways to reduce fossil-fuel use.
