Ohioan nominated for Nobel dies at 92

CINCINNATI

The University of Cincinnati says an award-winning professor nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for work that opened the door to advances in fighting cancer died on Sunday of pneumonia. He was 92.

Elwood Jensen was nominated numerous times for the peace prize for his discovery of hormone receptors while at the University of Chicago in the 1950s and 1960s.

The ground-breaking discovery has helped doctors treat breast, thyroid and prostate cancer.

Jensen has won dozens of other awards for his work, including a Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research, a prize that is considered America’s Nobel.

Jensen, who grew up in Springfield in western Ohio and has taught at the University of Cincinnati the past 10 years, is survived by a wife and two grown children.
