A full house officially welcomed the newest Austintown Fire Department chief Monday as Andrew Frost III was appointed by township trustees.

“The work you’ve done has set you apart from everyone else,” said Trustee Jim Davis.

Frost III succeeds his father, Andrew Frost Jr., who retired as chief in August after two decades as chief and four decades on the force.

He will be paid $72,322 annually, and had been the department’s assistant chief.

Along with his swearing-in and official business, Frost accepted a check from the Chicken Coupe Cruisers, which raised $3,600 in donations for the department.

Frost said the donations would be put back into the community to help children in need during the holiday season.

“It’s a lot of money, and it will help a lot of kids,” Frost said.

It also was announced that the fire department had secured two grants, one for equipment worth $80,000 and one for a defibrillator for EMS worked worth $1,500.

In other business at the trustee meeting, township Administrator Mike Dockry said a portion of Idaho Road would be marked differently to make the center lane a left turn only lane.

The planning and zoning department reported 12 new permits within the township totaling $2 million.

The new permits include business expansions from Uncle Bob’s Self Storage and Roth Brothers Inc., according to Darren R. Crivelli, zoning inspector.

Also at the meeting, Davis was appointed to replace outgoing Trustee David Ditzler on the Mahoning County Land Bank board.
