Board member sought for Mathews schools

VIENNA

Mathews Board of Education is accepting applications to replace board member Donald Cheffo, who resigned Wednesday.

Cheffo, who was completing the first year of his four-year term, is moving from the area, according to Brian Stidham, district treasurer. Stidham said applications to replace Cheffo will be available until Jan. 4 at the board offices, 4434-B Warren-Sharon Road, Vienna. The board expects to name the replacement later in January.

Teen Straight Talk has holiday dinner

Teen Straight Talk staff and friends hosted 15 families referred by area pastors from Mahoning and Trumbull counties for an old-fashioned dinner with Christmas caroling and fellowship recently in the Litco International building.

Mrs. Claus surprised attendees with baked cookies, gift cards, and hams.

Teen Straight Talk is based at 1393 Youngstown-Kingsville Road. The organization coordinates educational and abstinence programs for churches and schools. TST says it believes that teaching abstinence gives tools for lifestyle choices that lead to happier and healthier lives.

Girard man wins $120K in Cash 5

Youngstown

A Girard man won $120,000 after purchasing a winning lottery ticket.

The Ohio Lottery Commission said John Lyden matched all five numbers in Tuesday’s Rolling Cash 5 game.

According to a Ohio Lottery press release, Lyden bought the winning ticket at One Stop Mart on Logan Way. After federal and state taxes, Lyden will receive $85,200.

One Stop Mart will receive a $500 bonus for selling a ticket with five winning numbers.

Pathologist: Review mass-disaster plans

YOUNGSTOWN

Dr. Joseph Ohr, forensic pathologist and deputy Mahoning County coroner, called for review of local mass-disaster action plans and a renewed commitment to preventive mental health services in the wake of the Connecticut mass school shooting last Friday.

“We have to think about and improve emergency management, but we also have to think about and manage and do better with our mental health in this community,” Dr. Ohr said Thursday at the county commissioners’ meeting.

Residents displaced by Warren house fire

WARREN

Warren Fire Department extinguished a house fire at 2435 Northwest Blvd. NW at 2 p.m. Thursday.

The blaze started in a second-story bedroom and caused $20,000 damage. The home’s three occupants were being placed in a hotel by the American Red Cross. There were no injuries.
