The board of education appointed a new member Wednesday night.

At a special meeting, the board appointed Peter D. Cardiero as a replacement for a seat vacated last month.

President Richard Rees said the board had received six applicants and interviewed five of them during a Monday night meeting. Rees said Cardiero served as Girard school board member in the mid-1970s and currently serves as the city’s zoning inspector.

On Nov. 30, the board announced the resignation of Bill Bell, who had served on the board since 2007. He began his second four-year term in January after being re-elected in November 2011.

If Cardiero wishes to extend his term, he must be re-elected in November 2013, said Rees.

Ohio law stipulates that when a board member resigns, a replacement can be appointed for one year. If there are more than two years remaining on the term, the member must be re-elected.

Rees said Cardiero will be paid $125 for every monthly meeting that he attends.
