1 student dead in stabbing at University of Toledo

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — A fight between two students in a mostly empty dormitory at the University of Toledo left one dead and another injured, police said today.

Both were stabbed in what authorities said was not a random attack. Police do not believe anyone else was involved.

The two men, who knew each other, got into a fight Wednesday night in a stairwell at the dormitory where they were staying during the school’s holiday break, authorities said.

Police and university officials stressed that the violence was an isolated incident and that the campus was safe.

“There’s nothing we could have done to prevent this,” said Jeff Newton, the university’s police chief.

The men’s names were not immediately released. The one who survived was found with several stab wounds outside the International House on campus, and the one who died was found about 10 minutes later, Newton said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No charges have been filed.

Ten students, including four student workers along with four staff members, were staying at the dormitory over the break.

Police said they sent out an alert to students, faculty and staff advising them there was a dangerous situation and to stay away from the dormitory.
