Dan Renouf receives USHL weekly honor

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown Phantoms defenseman Dan Renouf was a dominant force at both ends of the ice last weekend in Des Moines, Iowa.

Monday, the United States Hockey League honored the second-year blue liner by naming him its defensive player of the week.

This is the second time this season that Renouf, 18, has received the league’s weekly honor, and the fifth time a Phantoms player has been singled out during the 2012-13 campaign.

Renouf racked up two goals, two assists and four points along with a plus-3 rating as the Phantoms (11-14-0, 22 points) split a pair of road games against the Buccaneers.

Swisher hits Cleveland for visit with Indians

CLEVELAND

Free agent Nick Swisher is visiting the Cleveland Indians, who have a hole to fill in right field.

Swisher, who won a World Series in his first of four seasons with the New York Yankees in 2009, is scheduled to arrive in Cleveland and will tour the team’s facilities at Progressive Field today.

Last week, the Indians traded right fielder Shin-Soo Choo to Cincinnati as part of a three-team, nine-player deal. The team can entice Swisher, who hit 24 homers last season for the Yankees, with the chance to be their full-time right fielder.

Swisher is a career .256 hitter in stops with the Athletics, White Sox and Yankees. He had 93 RBIs last season, as well, as New York won the American League East.

Canada’s women’s basketball coach quits

TORONTO

Allison McNeill has resigned as coach of Canada’s women’s basketball team after holding the job for more than a decade.

The Canadian women reached the quarterfinals of the London Olympics, losing to a U.S. team that went on to win the gold medal. Canada is ranked No. 9 in the world.

McNeill announced her resignation during a conference call Monday from her home in Surrey, British Columbia. She says she has given “heart and soul” to the team, but she says basketball is not as important as it once was.

Golf Channel to broadcast NCAAs

ORLANDO, Fla.

The Golf Channel will televise the NCAA Division I golf championships starting in 2014.

The Golf Channel will broadcast three days of the 2014 men’s championship from Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.

It then will carry the men’s and women’s championships the following year when South Florida plays host to both at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla. It marks the first time since 1997 that the women’s championship will be televised live.

Network president Mike McCarley said the partnership “will be the centerpiece of our broader commitment to covering the collegiate game.”

Baseball, softball agree on name of new body

LAUSANNE, Switzerland

Baseball and softball leaders have agreed on a name for the new unified international body seeking a place in the 2020 Olympics.

The World Baseball Softball Confederation will govern both sports in their joint bid for a return to the games.

The name was announced Monday following approval of the merger by the International Baseball Federation and International Softball Federation.

The group will be led by co-presidents Don Porter and Riccardo Fraccari. Porter is current president of the ISF; Fraccari heads the IBAF. Both men are in Lausanne this week for presentations to the IOC program commission.
