The Coach Gorby’s Families and Schools Together Kids Indoor Track & Field Club will run from January 3 through February 26.

The club, for athletes age 5-23, will have indoor practice and competition in the Watts Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Mike Ward selected

Mike Ward, United High School football coach, has been selected to receive the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association’s Sportsmanship, Ethics & Integrity Award.

Ward was one of 16 nominees from the state wide Football Coaches Association.

He is the first recipient from Region 8 which includes Mahoning and Trumbull Counties.

The award is presented to the head football coach who has demonstrated all the characteristics that represent the best of what a high school coach should be.

Phantoms tripped, 4-3

Tanner Karty scored the lone goal of the third period as Des Moines tripped the Youngstown Phantoms 4-3 in a USHL game on Saturday.

Austin Cangelosi gave the Phantoms a 1-0 lead at the 5:12 mark of the first period but Des Moines answered with a pair of scores.

Sam Anas tied it at 2-all for the Phantoms with a goal at the 7:00 mark of the second frame.

After a Des Moines tally, Tommy Davis scored to forge a 3-3 stalemate entering the final session.

Tom Miller, professional boxing judge, will be the guest speaker at the Curbstone Coaches meeting.

The group will meet at the Blue Wolfe Catering Hall Monday at noon.

2014 Tour de France to start in England

PARIS

Drawn by cycling’s runaway success in Britain, the Tour de France will cross the English Channel again in 2014 to start in the northeastern English city of Leeds and swing through London before returning to mainland Europe.

Tour organizers announced Friday the second British debut in a decade for cycling’s showpiece event, after the “Grand Depart” in London in 2007.

The selection of the county of Yorkshire for the 2014 start also comes after Bradley Wiggins this year became the first Briton to win the Tour in its 109-year history.

Santa Cruz outpoints Guevara, defends belt

Leo Santa Cruz defended his IBF bantamweight title with a unanimous decision over Alberto Guevara on Saturday in the first live boxing match on CBS in 15 years.

Santa Cruz (23-0-1, 13 KOs) won his third defense of his 118-pound belt in just over three months with steady aggression against Guevara (16-1), who performed well despite taking the fight on three weeks’ notice.

Asia rallies to cut Europe’s lead to 1

India’s Jeev Milkha Singh saved par on the final hole to earn a half-point and help Asia cut Europe’s lead to one Saturday in the Royal Trophy.

Down 31/2-1/2 on Friday after the opening foursomes, Asia won two fourball matches and halved the other two to cut Europe’s lead to 41/2-31/2 entering the eight closing singles matches Sunday at The Empire Hotel and Country Club.

Singh and Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat halved with European playing captain Jose Maria Olazabal and fellow Spanish star Miguel Angel Jimenez.
