Shop to sell rare beer by lottery

Staff report

BOARDMAN

A Boardman wine and beer shop has received access to some very expensive and limited-quantity Belgian beer.

Westvleteren XII hit stores for the first time Wednesday. The beer is brewed by 21 Trappist monks at the St. Sixtus Abbey in West-vleteren, Belgium, who follow the Rule of St. Bernardus, which is to brew only enough beer to fund the monks’ activities.

The beer is being sold to help renovate the abbey. Vintage Estate Wine and Beer has been allocated a limited amount of these special sets and is one of very few places in Ohio that have received this beer.

The Westvleteren XII has become so popular that demand has far surpassed production levels, which have not changed since 1946. Until recently, the only way to purchase the beer was to schedule an appointment to buy a limited amount directly from the abbey.

Vintage Estates will be providing tickets as part of a lottery system to give people a fair chance at the beer. Only 150 tickets will be given away; everyone will have a 50 percent chance of getting the product. Those who are selected will be able to purchase a six-pack for $85.99. The tickets will be distributed at 3 p.m., and the lottery will be at 5 p.m.

All profits will be donated to Making Kids Count.

Vintage Estates is at 7317 South Ave.
