Murder suspect surrenders to police for Youngstown homicide

YOUNGSTOWN — Jamel R. Smith, 20, of Kimmel St., indicted last week by a Mahoning County grand jury for the November murder of a Pontiac, Mich., man, turned himself in at the Youngstown Police Department at 10:47 p.m. Friday.

The victim, Oneil Williams, 28, was found by police dead lying in a pool of blood in the rear bedroom of a two-story East Side home on Atkinson Avenue early Nov. 20.

A report from the county coroner’s office says Williams died from gunshot wounds to the head, chest and abdomen. Next to Williams’ body, police found a small scale, a cellphone, suspected marijuana and two spent shell casings.

Sources said the shooting appeared to be tied to a fight over a woman.
