Excellent area schools recognized

The Eastern Ohio P-16 Partnership for Education has recognized area schools for their performance at the third annual “Excellence in Education — Celebrating our Schools” event earlier this month.

More than 100 building principals throughout Ashtabula, Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties were recognized for achieving distinctions of excellent or excellent with distinction on the Ohio Report Card.

Additionally, Lakeside Intermediate and Michigan Primary schools, both in the Ashtabula Area City School District, Conneaut Middle School in Conneaut Area City schools, Leetonia Middle, Daw Middle in Wellsville, Girard Junior High and LaBrae Intermediate schools were recognized for moving up two levels on the 2011-12 report cards.

The Partnership and the Turning Foundation also lauded three area teachers for their innovation in education. Those teachers:

Kathy Bennett, media specialist, Crestview Local School District.

Terrence Grimm, social studies, Trumbull Career and Technical Center.

Sarah Lowe, mathematics and science, Beaver Local Middle School.

The guest speaker was Rebecca Watts, associate vice chancellor for academic affairs, P-16 Initiative. Watts provides leadership for agency initiatives that rely on coordination among the University System of Ohio, the Ohio Department of Education and prekindergarten through 12th-grade schools.

Watts previously served as a member of the executive leadership teams at Ohio University, Murray State University and the Illinois Board of Education.

P-16’s community partners are the Dominion Foundation, Youngstown State University, Eastern Gateway Community College, Packer Thomas, Columbiana County Career and Technical Center and the Turning Foundation.
