Sycamores hire Sanford: Indiana State has hired Mike Sanford as its head football coach. The school sent out a news release announcing the hiring Friday and is planning to formally introduce Sanford next week. He replaces Trent Miles, who left after a third straight winning season to take the job at Georgia State on Nov. 30. Sanford spent this season as Utah State’s assistant head coach and was in charge of running backs and tight ends and helped lead the No. 18 Aggies to the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl on Saturday against Toledo. He was Utah’s offensive coordinator in 2003 and 2004 on Urban Meyer’s staff, then was UNLV head coach from 2005-09. He was the offensive coordinator at Louisville in 2010 and 2011.

Temple makes offer: Temple has made an offer to New York Giants assistant Matt Rhule to become the Owls’ new head coach, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press. The person spoke on anonymity Friday because Rhule had not yet formally accepted the position. Rhule was one of the final two candidates for the job. The person said University of Miami defensive coordinator Mark D’Onofrio withdrew from consideration. The Owls are in the market for their third coach in four seasons, following Steve Addazio’s departure to Boston College last week. Temple went 4-7 this season after having three straight winning seasons and playing in two bowl games under Addazio and Al Golden. The Giants play Sunday at Atlanta, which means Rhule might not be introduced as the new coach until next week.

App State selects Satterfield: Appalachian State has given interim coach Scott Satterfield the permanent job.

The school announced Friday that Satterfield was chosen as the replacement for Jerry Moore. Satterfield has spent 17 of the past 22 years at the school as either a player or assistant. He was a quarterback for the Mountaineers from 1992-95 and as a senior led them to the only unbeaten and untied season in school history. Satterfield was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach this season. He was put in charge of the program on an interim basis earlier this month, when it was announced that Moore would not return for a 25th season. Moore led Appalachian State to three national titles from 2005-07 and a memorable upset of then-No. 5 Michigan in 2007.

Holtz gets hired: Louisiana Tech officials say they’ve hired Skip Holtz as their new football coach. Holtz, whose hiring was announced Friday, replaces Sonny Dykes, who left to accept the head coaching job at California last week. The 48-year-old Holtz is the son of Hall of Fame coach Lou Holtz, who is known most for his long and successful stint at Notre Dame. The younger Holtz most recently coached at South Florida, which fired him this month following a 3-9 finish to the 2012 season. Holtz was 16-21 in three seasons at South Florida. Holtz is 88-71 overall in 13 seasons at Connecticut, East Carolina and USF.

UNC TB entering draft: North Carolina tailback Gio Bernard is entering the NFL draft after his sophomore season. The school announced Bernard’s decision Friday morning and a news conference is scheduled for Friday afternoon. Bernard is draft-eligible because he has been out of high school for three seasons. He missed the 2010 season with a knee injury, then became a first-team all-Atlantic Coast Conference selection the next two seasons
