Boardman police crack down on OVI

BOARDMAN

Township police will supplement regular patrols with high-visibility enforcement patrols during this holiday season through Jan. 1.

The department emphasizes enforcing laws on operating a vehicle while impaired, joining a nationwide crackdown. Officers also will target all violators for aggressive driving including speed, distracted driving and seat-belt use.

The holiday driving season can be a dangerous time. Last month, Boardman police investigated 10 OVI-related crashes — nearly three times its monthly average.

The funding for the additional patrols is provided by an Ohio Department of Public Safety Office of Criminal Justice Services federal traffic safety grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

North Side man charged in assault

YOUNGSTOWN

Police charged Greg Stanford, 44, of Pennsylvania Avenue, in an alleged felonious assault that took place earlier this month at his apartment.

Police made the arrest Friday morning.

The charge stems from a Dec. 7 incident at his home in which his 26-year-old girlfriend reported he threw her to the floor, causing her to hit her head. The woman said Stanford was smoking crack cocaine, and she was doing heroin until 2 a.m., when Stanford’s demeanor changed and he started swinging a box cutter at her.

He then cut off her clothes and belongings so she could not leave. The woman stayed on the floor until 6:30 a.m., escaping while Stanford was getting ready for work, she said.

She ran to the nearby Lyden House on the Youngstown State University campus, where she was able to get help. She was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center for treatment of bruises and cuts to her face and chest and scratches on her legs.
