Members of Girard First United Methodist Church will set a place at the Christmas dinner table for you — just let them know you’re coming.

The church, 22 N. Market St., will host a free dinner at noon Christmas Day for anyone who needs a place to celebrate.

Richard Brunton, a 12-year church member who is dinner coordinator, said the church welcomes “those in need” but also those who need or want companionship and fellowship on that special day.

“If you have no place to go or will be home alone, you’re welcome here,” Brunton said.

The Rev. Betsy Schenk, pastor, echoed that sentiment. She noted there are senior citizens whose families live out of state and some people who have no relatives. “We felt such an event was needed in the community,” she said, adding that some church members are in those circumstances.

“It’s what God would want us to do,” Brunton said of the event, which reaches out to the community.

The Christmas dinner is the first for the church. Brunton said they’re asking anyone who is interested in attending to make a reservation by Tuesday. Call the church at 330-545-4361.

Reservations are requested, he said, because “we don’t know if we’ll have 40 or 100.” But both he and the Rev. Ms. Schenk said no one will be turned away; they want to ensure they’ll have enough food.

On the menu is turkey with stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet potatoes, corn, green-bean casserole and of course, desserts and cookies.

Christmas carols will be played to add to the festive atmosphere.

“We’re going to have dinner family-style. We want to make it as much like home as possible,” Brunton said.

Brunton said the church also is offering transportation, especially for senior citizens.

“Christmas is about caring ... and taking care of people who need it,” Brunton said.

“Our church is excited about this,” Ms. Schenk said. “We’re a mission outpost in the community. We interface with the community ... extending and sharing God’s love.”
