The Canfield varsity wrestling team prepped for its Holiday Duals tournament by earning three more victories in recent matches against area teams.

The Cards dominated a three-team dual meet on Tuesday, beating EOWL foes Austintown-Fitch (55-9) and Beaver Local (60-15).

Racking up wins against the Beavers were Jacob Esarco (220), Curtis Burns (285), John Poullas (170) and Steven Daprile (120). Canfield lost only three of the 14 matches.

Against Division I Fitch, Stan Socha (182), Hayden Smith (195), Anthony Spencer (126) and Shawn Williams (145) all won bouts, as Canfield lost just two matches.

In addition to the dual meets, Canfield also competed in the East Liverpool Potter Classic “King of the Hill Tournament.” The two-day, 12-team tournament featured grapplers from Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

Placing third in their respective weight classes for Canfield were Sam Conner (195) and Paul Whitehead (170). Jared Bunch (182) was fourth, Ben Siegle (120), Bryan Batton (145) and Matt Burns (160) took fifth and Nathan Buttle (106) and Ross Duffet (126) finished sixth.

Last week, the Cards beat Division I Boardman 55-15 in a dual match. Posting wins were David Labra (152), Steven Hamilton (160), CJ Frost (138), Kyle West (106) and Matt Dunbar (113).

Despite the early-season success, Canfield coach Dean Conley isn’t about to let his team become complacent.

“I’m very proud of our team and coaching staff,” he said. “Enjoy this for 24 hours, but then it’s back to work tomorrow.”
