Pirates caravan has two appearances set

The Pittsburgh Pirates winter caravan will make two appearances in the area during this week.

On Wednesday they will appear at Poland Union Elementary for a private event.

Scheduled to participate are manager Clint Hurdle, players Alex Presley, Josh Harrison and Gaby Sanchez along with broadcaster Tim Neverett.

On Thursday the caravan will appear at the Butler Art Institute.

Players Neil Walker, Pedro Alvarez and Bryan Morris along with coach Nick Leyva and broadcaster Steve Blass are scheduled.

The Butler event includes a luncheon at noon.

Seven home games for 2013 YSU football team

The Youngstown State football team will play seven home regular-season games next season, including three against FCS playoff teams.

Highlighting the conference portion of the slate are 2012 playoff participants North Dakota State, Illinois State and South Dakota State.

The September non-conference slate features two old acquaintances and a new, but geographically close foe.

YSU plays Dayton in the home opener on August 29 for the first time since 1977.

The second home game is Sept. 7 against Morehead State.

The first-ever meeting with Duquesne is set for Sept. 21.

YSU youth baseball instructional camp

The Youngstown State baseball staff will host an instructional camp for boys and girls age 5 to 13 on Dec. 27-28 at the Watson and Tressel Training Site on YSU’s campus.

The camp will go from 9 a.m. to noon on both days during the holiday break.

All aspects and fundamentals of baseball will be taught, including hitting, fielding, base-running and the mental part of the game.

Slippery Rock inks Nicole Siciliano

Nicole Siciliano, a senior softball outfielder at Springfield Local High School will play softball at Slippery Rock Univ.

She will begin her senior season with the Tigers as a three-year letter winner, having represented the Northeast District in last season’s Ohio High School Fastpitch Coaches Association all-star team.

Harding product signed by Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, FLA.

The Jacksonville Jaguars signed fifth-year cornerback Antwaun Molden on Monday.

Molden, a Warren native, has played in 48 games with two starts since entering the NFL as a third-round draft pick of Houston in 2008. His career totals include 23 tackles, three passes defensed, two interceptions and 38 special teams tackles.

He spent three seasons (2008-10) with the Texans. He played in all 16 games and three postseason games for New England in 2011 and was with the New York Giants for the 2012 preseason.

Basketball coaches hall of fame ceremony

The Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association has scheduled its coaches and date for the hall of fame induction for the class of 2013.

The four high school coaches being inducted are the late Bill Cady of Cincinnati LaSalle; Mike Gallagher of Wooster; Carl Wolf of Racine Southern and honorary inductee Mark Huffman of Monroe Central.

The induction ceremony will be April 20 at 5:30 p.m.
