After losing three members of its 2010 and 2011 state runner-up teams, the Poland girls golf squad will look to carry on that winning tradition in 2012.

Gone are Christine Bilas (Notre Dame College), Maria Mancini (Indiana) and Giana DiBenedetto.

This year’s team will rely heavily on returning lettermen senior Rachel Jeswald and juniors Melina Hannon and Rachel Sines for leadership. New to the team this year is senior Julie Mortellaro, sophomores Mary Hunt and Cassandra Herdman and freshman Evyenia Spencer.

“This will be a year of growth for the program, every program goes through rebuilding. Our goal as a team is to work diligently on our short game to improve each time we step up to the golf ball on a given course,” said head coach Judy Young.

Young also said her players are willing to do just that.

“Younger players with limited playing experience are very eager to learn about the game and improve their scores. We will be a different team that grows with experiences as the season progresses.”
