Poland Relay for Life

On Sept. 7-8, there will be a multi-family yard sale at 28 Island Dr. in Poland, open from 9 a.m.–5 p.m. both days. This sale will offer housewares, baby items, books, clothing, bake sale and other miscellaneous pieces. All proceeds will be donated to the Poland Relay for Life.

On Sept. 22, there will be a craft show and car show at the Negley Volunteer Fire Department, from 9 a.m.–4 p.m. All profits from the refreshments will be donated to the Poland Relay for Life.

Ostomy support group to meet

The Youngstown Area Ostomy Support Group, sponsored by Humility of Mary Health Partners, will meet from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 11 at the Humility of Mary Home Care office, 979 Tibbetts-Wick Road in Girard. The group provides information and encouragement to individuals who have or will have ostomies. The meeting is free and open to ostomy patients, families and friends. Refreshments will be provided and parking is free.

The Youngstown Area Ostomy Support Group meets once a month at alternating locations in Trumbull and Mahoning counties. For more information, call 330-480-3440.

Annual steak fry to occur in September

The St. Vincent de Paul Society of Mahoning County and the Knights of Columbus Bishop Fenwick Council 13586 are holding their 2012 steak fry Sept. 15 at the Byzantine Center on Shady Run Road in Youngstown from 2-8 p.m. This fundraiser will go toward supporting the soup kitchen and food pantry of the St. Vincent de Paul Society and the charitable works of the Knights.

Tickets are $20 per person and include a steak dinner with all of the trimmings, beverages and dessert. There will be 99-cent draft beers available. Free discussion on prescription drug assistance

On Oct. 3, Pembrooke Place will be hosting a panel discussion at the center regarding prescription drug assistance. The panel will consist of representatives from the prescription drug assistance program in Youngstown, the Social Security office and Anthem Insurance. This discussion is free and open to the public. Baby Brilliant event set in Poland

The Poland library will host Baby Brilliant events every Wednesday in September at 10 a.m. This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6 to 23 months and includes 20 minutes of language enrichment, including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tales and talk for 2’s and 3’s

The Poland library will be reading developmentally-appropriate books, singing songs and rhymes, finger plays and offering other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader every Thursday in September at 10:30 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Fun time for 4’s and 5’s

There will be developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 4-5) become a successful reader at the Poland library every Thursday in September at 1 p.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Kids vote elections 2012

Vote for your favorite storybook character at the Poland library during regular business hours for the month of September. Nominate your favorite storybook character; one nomination per library visit. Top storybook characters from the September nominations will be on the October ballot. There will be three categories: toddler/preschool, grades K-2, and grades 3-6. In Oct. come to the Library to vote. Results will be posted Nov. 7.

Lego my library

Kids, ages 6 and up, can meet at the Poland library on Sept. 25 from 6-7 p.m. to enjoy creating Lego designs. Legos will be provided.

Pajama jam is sleepy-time fun

Put on your PJ’s and bring out the whole family on Sept. 17 at 6:30 p.m. as the Poland library presents stories and other fun activities.

Make a sky craft

Make art on a string to swing from the sky above the librarian’s desk during regular business hours at the Poland library during the month of Sept. This event is for all school-aged children.

Trim a tree in September

Children of all ages are welcome to decorate an ornament throughout the month of September during regular hours at the Poland library for the all-seasons tree.

Monstrous art contest to be hosted

First read the book, then bring it to life in art. “The Monstrumologist” author Rick Yancey will be coming to the main library on Oct. 16 and to coincide with his visit, for the 2012 art contest, you can illustrate your favorite character or scene from any of the Monstrumologist books. Any visual medium is welcome. You can submit your drawing, painting, sketch, photograph, computer-generated art, etc. on paper no larger than 11-by-17, to any library in Mahoning County. Be sure to put your name, telephone number and grade on the back of your artwork. Entries will be judged in two groups (grades 7-9 and grades 10-12) and prizes will be awarded to one winner and one runner-up from each group. Prizes include dinner with the author, a signed copy of “The Monstrumologist” and a monetary award. Contest begins Sept. 1 and entries must be received by no later than Oct. 6. This event is for teens in grades 7-12 who live in or attend school in Mahoning County.

Ohio companies going global

The second in a three-program series on taking your company’s products and services to the international market will be hosted by the Poland library at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. This event will feature Mousa Kassis, adjunct professor of economics at Youngstown State University and an International Trade Advisor to the Small Business Development Center housed at Youngstown State University’s Williamson College of Business Administration. He will focus on the tools and finances available by various government programs to assist farmers and small and medium businesses expanding and selling to the global market.

The final program of this series on taking your company to the international market will highlight the rules, regulations, and compliances for exporters on Sept. 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the Poland library. Friends of the Poland Library meeting

The Friends of the Poland Library meeting and presentation on quilting, featuring long-time quilter, Bertha Eszenyi, will occur Tuesday at 10 a.m. Eszenyi will discuss the history and techniques of quilting, including the revival of quilting in modern times. She will have quilts, books, and tools on display. Anyone attending who would be willing to bring a quilt to be part of the display is encouraged to do so. The September Friends meeting will also feature their annual potluck lunch. Members should bring a dish to share; officers will provide dessert. The Friends will accept donations for their book cart at the meeting.

Proceeds from the book cart support programs at Poland Library, including the Summer Reading Program. The book cart is not part of the bookstore on the lower level, which raises funds for the county-wide system. The meeting is open to the public.

Bring your e-Reader to the Poland library at 10 a.m. on Sept. 8 and from 6-7 p.m. on Sept. 10 and 24 and the librarians will show you how to download eBooks from the library’s digital catalog on the website. Get you blood pressure checked

Blood pressure screenings by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross will be offered at the Poland library on Sept. 25 from 1-4 p.m.

Libraries closed for Labor Day

All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed for Labor Day, this Monday. Austintown, Boardman, and Poland libraries will be open from 1-5 p.m. on Sundays beginning on Sept. 9.

Vendors needed for festival and craft show

Vendor/crafter space is still available for the Shepherd of the Valley–Poland Family Fall Festival and craft show. This year’s event will feature an array of outdoor activities for the whole family, including Friendship Hill horse carriage rides, bounce around, face painting, carnival games, music, concessions, bake sale, auctions, prizes and more.

The festival and craft show will take place on Sept. 22 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at Shepherd of the Valley in Poland (301 Western Reserve Road). Interested crafters/vendors can call Shepherd of the Valley-Poland at 330-726-7110, extension 0. Funds raised at this event will support resident activities.

Poland Rotary seeks golfers and sponsors for golf outing

The Poland Rotary will sponsor its annual community golf outing on Sept. 22 at Bedford Trails Golf Course, 713 Bedford Road, Lowellville. The four-person scramble has a 9 a.m. shotgun start and includes breakfast, lunch, 18 holes of golf with a cart, dinner, beverages and more.

The cost to play is $65 per person. The outing will offer door prizes, raffles, putting contest and a $10,000 hole-in-one prize, sponsored by Packer Thomas & Becker Funeral Homes. Hole sponsors for this event are $100 and can be purchased by contacting William Miner 330-503-0902. Reservations are due by Sept. 12. All proceeds from this event benefit local charities.

Local doctor offers free health lectures

Dr. Kathleen Padgitt, local kidney specialist, is presenting a series of lectures on healthy living. The program will be held at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center’s Azalea Room.
