Workshop to give provide financial peace

Canfield Presbyterian Church will host Dave Ramsey’s program titled “Financial Peace University,” an educational and skill-building workshop with Bible-based concepts that can give hope to anyone from the financially distressed to the financially secure.

This nine-week course will be led by Jill McCullough, a certified financial planner and assistant professor at Youngstown State University. Both married couples and singles are invited to attend and classes will be held on Wednesday evenings from 5:30-7 p.m., beginning Sept. 19.

Canfield Cub Scout Pack 25 round-up

Boys in first through fifth grade or 7-10 years old interested in joining Cub Scouts can attend the Canfield Cub Scout Pack 25 round-up on Sept. 12 at 6:30 p.m. at Camp Stambaugh on Leffingwell Road or the fall family camp starting at noon on Oct. 20 at Camp Akela. Drive-through chicken dinner on Monday

Western Reserve United Methodist Church, located at 4580 Canfield Road in Canfield, will host a drive-through chicken dinner on Monday from 4 p.m. until they are sold out. The menu includes stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans and a brownie for $7.

Sing during worship at the Canfield Fair

On Sunday, at the Canfield Fair, singers are invited to assemble at the stage near the grandstand/concourse to sing during the 9:30 a.m. Fair Ecumenical worship service. A choir rehearsal will begin at 9 a.m., followed by the presentation of two anthems during the church service. Participants will be reimbursed their admission fee for that day. Musical direction and additional special music will be presented by Tom and Kelly Scurich, accompanied by Adrienne Lesnett.

Ostomy support group

The Youngstown Area Ostomy Support Group, sponsored by Humility of Mary Health Partners, will meet from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 11 at the Humility of Mary Home Care office, 979 Tibbetts-Wick Road in Girard. The group provides information and encouragement to individuals who have or will have ostomies. The meeting is free and open to ostomy patients, families and friends. Refreshments will be provided and parking is free.

The Youngstown Area Ostomy Support Group meets once a month at alternating locations in Trumbull and Mahoning counties. For more information, call 330-480-3440.

Annual steak fry to occur in September

The St. Vincent de Paul Society of Mahoning County and the Knights of Columbus Bishop Fenwick Council 13586 are holding their 2012 steak fry Sept. 15 at the Byzantine Center on Shady Run Road in Youngstown from 2-8 p.m. This fundraiser will go toward supporting the soup kitchen and food pantry of the St. Vincent de Paul Society and the charitable works of the Knights.

Tickets are $20 per person and include a steak dinner with all of the trimmings, beverages and dessert. There will be 99-cent draft beers available. There will also be a Chinese auction and 50/50 raffle. Tickets can be obtained by calling Brian Antal at 330-690-8435 or Dennis Mamone at 330-503-5510.

ABWA meeting to be Sept. 11

The Mill Creek Chapter of American Business Women’s Association (ABWA) will hold its Sept. 11 meeting at Golden Corral on Route 224 in Boardman. Members will register at the door for either regular buffet or senior buffet; prices will vary. The speaker for the evening is Claudia Zacharko, owner of Piccadilly Parlour in Canfield. Free discussion on prescription drug assistance

On Oct. 3, Pembrooke Place will be hosting a panel discussion at the center regarding prescription drug assistance. The panel will consist of representatives from the prescription drug assistance program in Youngstown, the Social Security office and Anthem Insurance. This discussion is free and open to the public. Libraries closed for Labor Day

All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed for Labor Day, this Monday. Austintown, Boardman, and Poland libraries will be open from 1-5 p.m. on Sundays beginning on Sept. 9.

Vendors needed for festival and craft show

Vendor/crafter space is still available for the Shepherd of the Valley–Poland Family Fall Festival and craft show. This year’s event will feature an array of outdoor activities for the whole family, including Friendship Hill horse carriage rides, bounce around, face painting, carnival games, music, concessions, bake sale, auctions, prizes and more.

The festival and craft show will take place on Sept. 22 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at Shepherd of the Valley in Poland (301 Western Reserve Road). Interested crafters/vendors can call Shepherd of the Valley-Poland at 330-726-7110, extension 0. Funds raised at this event will support resident activities.

Dr. Kathleen Padgitt, local kidney specialist, is presenting a series of lectures on healthy living. The program will be held at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center’s Azalea Room. Canfield open houses scheduled

Canfield Schools will be hosting open houses for the upcoming 2012-13 school year. On Thursday Canfield Village Middle School will have its open house for grades five and six at 6:30 p.m. Canfield High School will host an open house on Sept. 20 at 6 p.m.

Baby Brilliant event to happen in Canfield

The Canfield library will host a Baby Brilliant event on Sept. 10 at 10 a.m. This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6 to 23 months and includes 20 minutes of language enrichment, including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tales and talk for 2’s and 3’s

The Canfield library will be reading developmentally-appropriate books, singing songs and rhymes, finger plays and offering other activities that will help children (ages 2-3) become successful readers every Wednesday in September at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Fun time for 4’s and 5’s

There will be developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 4-5) become a successful reader at the Canfield library every Tuesday in September at 1:30 p.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Gotta move storytime

There will be a fun and interactive storytime where children can dance and wiggle all that energy out at the Canfield library on Thursday at 10 a.m. This is an active story time for young and restless children ages 2-5. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Guess ‘n go at the library

Guess the number of items in the jar at the Canfield library during regular business hours during the month of September. The closest guess wins. This event if for children of all ages.

Lego my library set

Children age 6 and up can meet at Canfield Library from 6-8 p.m. on Sept. 11 to create Lego designs. The event lasts approximately two hours. Legos will be provided.

Tales to tails at library

Sign up to read to a registered therapy dog, which helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence and encourages a love of reading at the Canfield library on Sept. 17 at 6:30 p.m. School-age readers of all levels and abilities are welcome. Bring a book of your choice. Dogs are provided by K-9 for Compassion, registered Delta society therapy dogs. Sign-up is required. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Canfield library.

Monstrous art contest to be hosted

First read the book, then bring it to life in art. “The Monstrumologist” author Rick Yancey will be coming to the main library on Oct. 16. To coincide with his visit, for the 2012 art contest, you can illustrate your favorite character or scene from any of the Monstrumologist books. Any visual medium is welcome. You can submit your drawing, painting, sketch, photograph, computer-generated art, etc. on paper no larger than 11-by-17, to any library in Mahoning County. Be sure to put your name, telephone number and grade on the back of your artwork. Entries will be judged in two groups (grades 7-9 and grades 10-12) and prizes will be awarded to one winner and one runner-up from each group. Prizes include dinner with the author, a signed copy of “The Monstrumologist” and a monetary award. Contest begins Sept. 1 and entries must be received by no later than Oct. 6. This event is for teens in grades 7-12 who live in or attend school in Mahoning County.

Duct tape couture

Stop by the library on Sept. 17 at 2:30 p.m. to make some super fashionable duct tape creations. Bring your friends and the library will provide the duct tape. This event is for teens in grades 7-12.

Think you know young adult fiction? See if you can identify the title of the book from just the novel’s last sentence during regular business hours at the Canfield library throughout the month of September. If you know your lines, you could win a prize. The event is for teens in grades 7-12.
