The first day at a new school can be a little bit stressful, but members of the Canfield Players Drama Club did their part to help new children feel at home during a new student orientation party on Aug. 24 in the Canfield High School cafeteria.

Twelve new students ate lunch with some of the volunteers from the school’s drama club. After a few quick speeches from the principals and drama adviser Becky Heikkinen, the kids introduced themselves to their peers. They played a few ice-breaking games and then got to the most helpful part of the day: tours. Volunteers each took three new students around the building so they did not have to worry about getting lost on the first day.

“It made me a lot less nervous,” said Samantha Fritz, a freshman coming from Willow Creek Learning Center who plans to join drama club this year. “I definitely know where to go now.”

Even the older kids know how much it helps to see the school before it is filled with other people, especially for those who are freshmen and new to the district.

“I wanted to do it because I felt like it would have been helpful for me when I was a freshman to know what the teachers were like and know how the classes would be. I’m glad I could help other people,” said junior Alisha Boykin, who helped out.
