Local author to speak on Youngstown’s parish schools

The St. Charles Borromeo parish library committee will sponsor a talk by local educational historian, Thomas G. Welsh, at 7 p.m. on Sept. 20, at the parish’s ministries building, 7345 Westview Dr., Boardman.

Welsh, author of “Closing Chapters: Urban Change, Religious Reform, and the Decline of Youngstown’s Catholic Elementary Schools,” will discuss factors that led to the virtual disappearance of the city’s parish schools between 1960 and 2006. Boardman local elected Commandant

Alan Kozak of Boardman has been elected and installed as Commandant of the Marine Corps League Tri-State Detachment No. 494. Kozak enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1967 and served until December 1970. Since then, he has been involved in the Marine Corps League, volunteering for such programs as Toys for Tots.

Ostomy support group to meet

The Youngstown Area Ostomy Support Group, sponsored by Humility of Mary Health Partners, will meet from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 11 at the Humility of Mary Home Care office, 979 Tibbetts-Wick Road in Girard. The group provides information and encouragement to individuals who have or will have ostomies. The meeting is free and open to ostomy patients, families and friends. Refreshments will be provided and parking is free.

The Youngstown Area Ostomy Support Group meets once a month at alternating locations in Trumbull and Mahoning counties. For more information, call 330-480-3440.

Annual steak fry to occur in September

The St. Vincent de Paul Society of Mahoning County and the Knights of Columbus Bishop Fenwick Council 13586 are holding their 2012 steak fry Sept. 15 at the Byzantine Center on Shady Run Road in Youngstown from 2-8 p.m. This fundraiser will go toward supporting the soup kitchen and food pantry of the St. Vincent de Paul Society and the charitable works of the Knights.

Tickets are $20 per person and include a steak dinner with all of the trimmings, beverages and dessert. There will be 99-cent draft beers available. ABWA meeting to be Sept. 11

The Mill Creek Chapter of American Business Women’s Association (ABWA) will hold its Sept. 11 meeting at Golden Corral on Route 224 in Boardman. Members will register at the door for either regular buffet or senior buffet; prices will vary. The speaker for the evening is Claudia Zacharko, owner of Piccadilly Parlour in Canfield. Free discussion on prescription drug assistance

On Oct. 3, Pembrooke Place will be hosting a panel discussion at the center regarding prescription drug assistance. The panel will consist of representatives from the prescription drug assistance program in Youngstown, the Social Security office and Anthem Insurance. This discussion is free and open to the public. Vendors needed for festival and craft show

Vendor/crafter space is still available for the Shepherd of the Valley–Poland Family Fall Festival and craft show. This year’s event will feature an array of outdoor activities for the whole family, including Friendship Hill horse carriage rides, bounce around, face painting, carnival games, music, concessions, bake sale, auctions, prizes and more.

The festival and craft show will take place on Sept. 22 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at Shepherd of the Valley in Poland (301 Western Reserve Road). Interested crafters/vendors can call Shepherd of the Valley-Poland at 330-726-7110, extension 0. Funds raised at this event will support resident activities.

Local doctor offers free health lectures

Dr. Kathleen Padgitt, local kidney specialist, is presenting a series of lectures on healthy living. The program will be held at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center’s Azalea Room. Baby Brilliant event to happen in Boardman

The Boardman library will host a Baby Brilliant event on Thurdsday at 10 a.m. This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6 to 23 months and includes 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tales and talk for 2’s and 3’s

The Boardman library will be reading developmentally-appropriate books, singing songs and rhymes, finger plays and offering other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader every Wednesday in September at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

It’s a royal affair at the library

Arrive at the Boardman library on Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. dressed in costume as a knight or a princess to the medieval tournament with stories and games. Program will last one hour and will honor top readers from the summer reading program. Children of all ages will make an edible “dragon egg” craft. Preschoolers must attend with an adult. Make and play-it tween tournament

Make a yarn yo-yo and a ladder golf game at the Boardman library on Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. and challenge your friends. This one-hour program is open to students in grades 4-6 and they will “Crown a Champion.”

Martino motorsports at the Boardman Library

Drivers Tom and Ryan Martino will have a special story time presentation at the Boardman library on Sept. 29 at 11 a.m. They will sign autographs and read to the children. You can also check out their race car dragster in the parking lot.

Monstrous art contest to be hosted

First read the book, then bring it to life in art. “The Monstrumologist” author Rick Yancey will be coming to the main library on Oct. 16 and to coincide with his visit, for the 2012 art contest, you can illustrate your favorite character or scene from any of the Monstrumologist books. Any visual medium is welcome. You can submit your drawing, painting, sketch, photograph, computer-generated art, etc. on paper no larger than 11-by-17, to any library in Mahoning County. Be sure to put your name, telephone number and grade on the back of your artwork. Entries will be judged in two groups (grades 7-9 and grades 10-12) and prizes will be awarded to one winner and one runner-up from each group. Prizes include dinner with the author, a signed copy of “The Monstrumologist” and a monetary award. Contest begins Sept. 1 and entries must be received by no later than Oct. 6. This event is for teens in grades 7-12 who live in or attend school in Mahoning County.

Teen advisory board meeting

Check out the monthly TAB (Teen Advisory Board) meeting on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. The TAB meets the first Wednesday of the month at the Boardman, Library. Newcomers are always welcome. This event is for teens in grades 7-12.

Done with your jigsaw puzzle and want to try another? The Boardman library will be hosting a puzzle swap at 5 p.m. on Sept. 12. Join fellow jigsaw enthusiasts and swap puzzles. This event is sponsored by the Friends of PLYMC.

Friends of the Boardman library meeting

The Boardman Friends of the Library meeting and presentation, “Observations in Art and Life” with Dr. Lou Zona, Director, Butler Institute of American Art on Wick Avenue, will take place on Sept. 10 at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library.

Blood pressure screenings by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross will be offered at the Boardman library on Tuesday from 12:30-3 p.m.

Libraries closed for Labor Day

All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed for Labor Day, on Monday. Austintown, Boardman, and Poland libraries will be open from 1-5 p.m. on Sundays beginning on Sept. 9.
