Boardman 100-pounders earn first victory

The Boardman Little Spartans 100-pound team, which consists of players ages 6-8, earned its first victory of the season, beating the Austintown Little Falcons 20-6 last Sunday.

The Spartans took the early lead when Chris Kerby scored in the first quarter. Boardman increased its advantage to 14-0 on a touchdown by Blaine Strines.

Austintown closed the gap to 14-6 with its only score of the game. Boardman’s Logan Cormell sealed the victory with a touchdown.

Leading the offensive charge for the Spartans was lineman Alex Lindeman. Defensive back Blake Ewert stopped a Little Falcons’ threat with his first interception of the season.

120-pound Spartans beat rival Austintown

The Little Spartans’ 120-pound squad, consisting of players ages 9 and 10, recorded its first win of the season, topping ALF 14-8 on Sunday.

Boardman scored on the first play from scrimmage when Aiden Slocum rushed 65 yards for the score. Austintown took the lead late in the second quarter, going up 8-6 at halftime.

The third quarter was dominated by the Little Spartans and was capped by Hunter Needham’s go-ahead touchdown and a two-point conversion.

Defensive standouts for Boardman were Zander Schobel, Ethan Elder, Anthony Evans and Matt Nicastro.

Boardman heavyweights fall to Little Falcons

The 140-pounders suffered their first loss of the season in the form of a 28-8 defeat against the Little Falcons. After both teams held each other on downs, Austintown scored late in the first quarter to go ahead 8-0. Boardman, led by quarterback Devin Whitaker, used its power offense to move the ball. Kareem Hamden led the offense in rushing for the first half.

But Austintown scored on a long run and padded its lead to 16-0 at halftime. Down 28-0, the Spartans avoided the shutout when Dylan Gursky scored on a toss sweep. Hamden added the conversion to make it 28-8. Boardman will travel to Howland today for Week 3 action.
