WARREN

A Youngstown man pleaded innocent to four charges Wednesday, accused of fleeing from Warren police Tuesday afternoon in a stolen car and then on foot into the Mahoning River, where he was captured.

Patrolman David Weber, watching for traffic offenders on West Market Street, observed Keylin D. Shaw, 26, of Camden Avenue, covering his face as he passed the cruiser at 2:40 p.m., Weber said in a police report.

Weber attempted to stop the vehicle for excessive speed, but Shaw took off, reaching a speed of 90 miles per hour on Highland Avenue Southwest before failing to negotiate a turn at Main and Dover Avenues, hitting a stopped pickup truck head-on.

Weber’s cruiser also struck the back of Shaw’s vehicle, a 2012 Dodge Avenger. Shaw fled on foot, followed by Weber, into an open gate at the pump house across the street from the blast furnace at RG Steel.

Shaw and Weber ran a short distance more, where Weber reported sliding down a steep embankment into the Mahoning River, where he saw Shaw 15 to 20 feet away near the river bank.

When Shaw attempted to climb out of the river, Weber deployed his stun gun on him, causing Shaw to fall back into the river and stop trying to flee.

Shaw and Weber waited for other officers to arrive before Shaw was taken into custody. Officers used a rope to help Weber and another officer who came to assist, Patrolman Nick Carney, because their equipment had weighted them down, the police report said.

Police learned later that the car Shaw was driving had been reported stolen out of Boardman on Aug. 4.

Shaw is being held in the Trumbull County jail in lieu of $100,000 bond, charged with felony counts of failure to comply with the orders of a police officer, receiving stolen property and failure to stop after an accident. He also pleaded innocent to a misdemeanor charge of resisting arrest.

Troopers with the Southington post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol investigated the crash, which happened in Warren Township, but a dispatcher at the post said Wednesday afternoon no information on the crash was available.
