Lesser term sought in death 14 years after attack

PITTSBURGH (AP) — A western Pennsylvania man convicted in the death of a woman who died 14 years after an attack left her in a vegetative state her can seek a lesser sentence.

The state Superior Court agreed Tuesday to hear arguments in the sentencing of 48-year-old Stevenson Rose in the 2007 death of Mary Mitchell.

Last year, Rose received a maximum sentence of 20 to 40 years in prison in Mitchell’s September 2007 death. He’s seeking a lesser sentence because the maximum sentence was 10 to 20 years at the time of the 1993 attack.

Mitchell was beaten, kicked and sexually assaulted inside her Pittsburgh home following a dispute over drugs. A second man was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.
