Youngstown school board declines to hire instructor who has police record
YOUNGSTOWN
A man who had been picked as a law enforcement instructor at Choffin Career and Technical Center was removed from the school board agenda before Tuesday’s meeting.
Karen Green, assistant superintendent for human resources, said she didn’t have all of the required paperwork to present the appointment of Daniel Martens of Canfield to the school board.
She said she doesn’t expect that appointment to be presented to the board in the future.
Court records show that Martens pleaded guilty and was convicted earlier this year in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court on a misdemeanor charge of improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle.
He was sentenced to probation. The charge was originally a felony but was reduced as part of a plea agreement.
Green declined to comment about whether the charge played a role in the removal of Martens’ name from the appointment list.
