Rig jack-knifes on I-80

GIRARD

A tractor-trailer rig jack-knifed attempting to avoid hitting an out-of-control car on Interstate 80 just west of the U.S. Route 422 exit, and tied up traffic Monday between 8:10 and 8:50 p.m.

The car driver, a 44-year-old Youngstown woman, was taken to Northside Medical Center for minor injuries. The truck driver, a New Jersey man, was not hurt.

Girard police said the car was westbound on Route 422 when it spun out of control on the wet road. The truck, about two truck lengths behind the car, braked in an unsuccessful attempt to avoid hitting the vehicle and jack-knifed on the highway.

Once the scene was cleared, the truck driver was able to drive away. No citations were issued Monday, police said.
