Marriage, nonviolence, community safety and women of color are among the topics of several events planned as part of the 2012-13 Community Diversity Program Series.
The series is presented by the Youngstown State University Diversity Council, through its Community Diversity Committee. The purpose of the committee is to plan a variety of events for the community to learn about and participate in programs and activities that promote awareness of cultural, social, economic, racial, gender and other forms of diversity in our society.
This year’s series features a lecture by Julianna Acheson of the University of Maine about the institution of marriage from the perspective of cultures beyond the West. The lecture is 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, in the Chestnut Room of Kilcawley Center on the YSU campus.
The series also features the 2nd Annual Non-Violence Parade and Rally at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct.7, starting on Lincoln Avenue and proceeding to downtown Youngstown. Anyone interested in being in the parade should contact Penny Wells at 330-788-0545.
Also, the series includes the annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration, with the opening ceremony 12:15 p.m. Sept. 13 in the rotunda of the Mahoning County Courthouse. The keynote speaker is Dr. Consuelo Hernandez of Canfield.
The Community Diversity Program Series is sponsored by the YSU Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity, which is responsible for the oversight and collaboration of various diversity activities and programs throughout the community and on campus.
