Singers are invited to assemble at the stage near the grandstand/concourse to sing during an ecumenical worship service at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 2 at the Canfield Fair.

A choir rehearsal will begin at 9 followed by the presentation of two anthems during the church service.

Participants will be reimbursed their admission fee for that day. Musical direction and additional special music will be presented by Tom and Kelly Scurich, assisted by accompanist Adrienne Lesnett.

‘Elvis Gospel’

Mark Lee Pringle and his Blue Moon Band will be featured at a service at 10 a.m. Sunday at Central Christian Church, 2051 E. Market St.

Pringle portrays an “early” 1950s Elvis, Brenda Pringle is on keyboards, Marty Cohen, drums; and Bill Lewis, bass.

The Society of St. John Chrysostom, Youngstown-Warren Chapter, will present “The Albanians of the East in the West: A Look at the Greek Rite Albanians in Italy and the Orthodox Albanians in North America” at 7 p.m. Sept. 4 at St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church, 7782 Glenwood Ave.

Speaker will be Deacon Andrew J. Rubis, who was a tonsured chanter in Albanian Orthodox Churches 1997-2008.

The society is an ecumenical organization of Catholic and Orthodox clergy and laity.

Children’s choir

The Children of the World International Children’s Choir will be in concert at 7 p.m. Sept. 2 at Abundant Life Fellowship, 46469 state Route 46.

The concert is part of the group’s 2012-13 Rescue Tour, which is designed to call attention to the impact of poverty, malnutrition and dirty water on millions of children worldwide.

The choir, made up of disadvantaged and orphaned children from several countries, ministers in music and dance. During their visit, they will stay along with traveling chaperones, in homes of host families from the church.

The concert is free and open to the public.

The choir is an arm of World Help, a faith-based humanitarian organization that serves the physical and spiritual needs of people living in impoverished nations.

Prayer team

Larry and Betty Stephens, coordinators of Youngstown City and Regional Prayer Team, announced an “end of summer” picnic for churches that participated in team events. It will be at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Boardman Park.

A “prayer watch” is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Metro Assembly of God, 2530 South Ave.

The prayer team also plans a “church family reunion” from noon to 6 p.m. Sept. 8 at Lordstown Village Park, Route 45. Participants are asked to bring a covered dish or dessert to share. Spiritual institute

Spiritual Development Institute at Grace African Methodist Episcopal Church, 1137 Main Ave., SW, will present a program, “Finding God Within,” with the Rev. Gena Thornton, instructor.

Sessions will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 5-7. The Rev. Beverly Cofield and Tommy Sanders will provide music.

A free-will offering will be taken.

Church anniversary

Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 140 Cherry St., will celebrate its 100th anniversary during a service at 10 a.m. Sept. 23 with Bishop Elizabeth Eaton of the Northeastern Ohio Synod of Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

She will be assisted by the Revs. Dee Emmert, David Conrad and former pastors of the church.

Christian education

Greater Friendship Baptist Church, 646 Lakewood Ave., will host an in-service Christian education workshop from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 8. Registration will be from 8:30 to 9.

The theme is “Apply God’s Word through the Teaching Ministry.”

The Rev. Sherri Dawson will present “Creative Teaching, Nurturing the Student;” Pastor Raymond Mason, “Building a Healthy Sunday School;” and Pastory Larry McCullough, “Taking It Home by Applying God’s Word.”

Cost is $10 for church members and $15 for non-members; breakfast and lunch are included.

Comedy at church

The senior choir of Mount Zion Baptist Church, 827 Wilson Ave., will present the religious musical comedy, “The Gospel Train,” at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Pilgrimage planned

The Slovak Catholic Federation, Youngstown Branch, will have its annual pilgrimage in honor of Our Sorrowful Mother on Sept. 16 at Our Lady of Lebanon Shrine, 2759 N. Lipkey Road.

Devotions will begin at 2:30 p.m. with the Sts. Cyril and Methodius novena followed by annointing of the sick and confessions.

A Slovak Mass will be at 3:30 with Monsignor Robert J. Siffrin, vicar general of the Diocese of Youngstown, giving the homily.

A dinner will follow Mass. Tickets are $15 for adults and $6 for children. They are available from SCF members or by calling 330-782-9136. No tickets will be available at the door. Dinner is optional.

Memorial service

A memorial service is planned Sept. 1 at St. James Episcopal Church, 7640 Glenwood Ave., for the Rev. Gordon Kelly Marshall, former rector, who died Aug. 3.

A musical prelude will be at 9:30 a.m. The Right Rev. Mark Hollingsworth Jr., bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio, will officiate at the service at 10.

Father Kelly served congregations in Alabama, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio.

He began his career in the United Methodist Church and in December 2011 marked the 25th anniversary of his ordination in the Episcopal Church.
