Huntington Bank donated 1,000 backpacks filled with school supplies to children in need throughout the Mahoning Valley and in Mercer County, Pa., last week.

The donation was part of Huntington’s Annual Backpack giveaway, providing backpacks to needy families throughout the six states Huntington serves.

Locally, Huntington has partnered with United Way to identify families that will benefit from this project in Columbiana, Mahoning, Trumbull and Mercer counties.

As was the case last year, Big Lots made backpacks available to Huntington at a reduced rate and donated items for the backpacks.

“Huntington recognizes that difficult times continue for many families needing to supply their children with the supplies to begin the school year,” said Frank Hierro, Huntington regional president for the Mahoning Valley.

“Huntington believes in doing the right thing by collaborating with our partners for this special initiative,” he said.

As part of the United Way “Stuff the Bus” program, Huntington colleagues helped load the backpacks on the school bus.

With the United Way’s help, the backpacks were distributed as needed at several locations throughout Huntington’s Mahoning Valley Region.

The bank has partnered with United Way for the past several years to identify the most-deserving children.
