Canine heroin bust

Springfield Township’s new police dog made its first heroin bust this week.

Patrolman Glenn Corey and police dog Dany made a traffic stop about 2 p.m. Thursday on state Route 164.

After a search of the vehicle revealed hypodermic needles, spoons with suspected heroin and a knife, police arrested the passenger, Michael Owen Bowers, 31, of Fredericktown, Pa., and charged him with drug paraphernalia, possessing drug abuse instruments, and possession of heroin, according to reports.

Book bag giveaway

Cindy Michael and family, in conjunction with the Lena, Mason, and Christian Memorial Fund, are hosting a fun day and book bag giveaway for children at Tod Park from 1 to 4 p.m. today.

There will be food, face painting, crafts, a visit from a clown and a special guest. Children will receive a free book bag filled with school supplies.

The event is in memory of Lena Cross and her two children, Mason and Christian, who were murdered Sept. 13, 2005. The case remains unsolved. For information, visit www.lenamasonchristian.org.

Panerathon closings

On Sunday, these roads in Mill Creek MetroParks will be closed from 7 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. for the Covelli Panerathon 10K race: Price Road, West Glacier, West, and Memorial Hill drives, and the Price Road entrance to Fellows Riverside Gardens. Also, downtown area streets will be closed intermittently for the event. Extra time should be allotted for anyone traveling in the downtown area Sunday morning between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Hawthorne Street between Glenwood Avenue and Edwards Street on the South Side will be closed from noon to 9 p.m. today for a community block party.

Memory Book sale

NORTH LIMA

The Beaver Township Bicentennial Memory Book will go on sale Wednesday.

The memory book, which covers the township’s history from the 2011 anniversary events back through several decades, includes 72 pages of photographs and information on the township and its schools, churches and organizations. The book may be purchased from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays and 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays at the township administration office, 11999 South Ave., North Lima, through September. The cost is $10.

Midlothian robbery

Police are investigating the aggravated robbery of a man and woman.

At about 2:40 a.m. Friday a 20-year-old Leetonia woman and a 23-year-old Berlin Center man were walking westbound on Midlothian Boulevard toward a gas station because their vehicle had run out of fuel, police report.

Two men approached the pair, brandished weapons and said, “Give me all you got, and walk away, and don’t look back.” The suspects fled eastbound with the victims’ checkbook, license, keys and debit card.

Guilford Lake event

The Guilford Lake Civic Association will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Guilford Lake Ruritan Hall, 33554 state Route 172.

Guest speakers include Matt Backhaus, who will announce counts and types of fish found in the recent shocking of area lakes, and Matthew Smith, who will present a slide show of scenic rivers in Northeast Ohio. The public is encouraged to attend, as well as anyone interested in the possibility of Columbia Gas expanding its services to the Guilford Lake area.
